Edgar Hugh Sands was a newspaper reporter and advertising manager. He lived at 1934 Barclay Street from 1901 to 1905.

 

Family Background

Edgar Hugh Sands was born on February 9, 1874, in Maidstone, Kent. His father was Edward Sands (1839-1877), who was a grocer and farmer. Edgar’s mother was Marion Kathleen O’Malley (sometimes “Malley”) (1846-1919).

After Edward Sands died in 1877, Marion operated a private school in Maidstone for a time. She later moved to British Columbia, where she remained until the summer of 1918, when she went to California. She died in Los Angeles on January 30, 1919. She was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery in Los Angeles. [Note: the article below says that Edward Sands also moved to British Columbia, but this appears to be incorrect.]

Edgar arrived in British Columbia in 1896. He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1899. He was a reporter for the Vancouver News-Advertiser, and he was living at 1012 Melville Street.

On August 18, 1902, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Edgar married Whilamina Rose Avery Hawkins. She was born in London, Ontario, on July 8, 1873. Her parents were John Charles Hawkins (1851–1920) and Marie Elizabeth Langlois (1850–1931).

John and Marie Hawkins moved to Vancouver about 1906. John died in Vancouver on January 7, 1920.

Life in British Columbia

During his time in British Columbia, Edgar was a newspaperman and realtor. He also promoted the community of White Rock as a summer resort.

During the First World War he enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

He later became a member of the Canadian Legion in New Westminster.

He was a member of the Board of Trade in New Westminster.

He also promoted the work of the Y.M.C.A.

Edgar died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on March 19, 1944.

On April 27, 1935, in Vancouver, he married Audrie Elsie McMurphy (sometimes Audrey), who was a school teacher. She was born in New Westminster, British Columbia on May 28, 1904. Her parents were James Patrick McMurphy and Elsie May Smith.

Lang worked as a newspaper publisher until he retired about 1965. He died at Magna Bay, on the north shore of Shuswap Lake, British Columbia on May 19, 1970.

Audrie died at Bowser, British Columbia on December 12, 1995.

 

Unnamed Boy Sands (still-born)

On April 1, 1905, in St. Thomas, Ontario, Edgar and Whilamina had a still-born son. Whilamina’s father, J.C. Hawkins, was the informant on the death record.

 

Frances Irene Emily Sands

Frances Irene Emily Sands was born in New Westminster, British Columbia, on March 2, 1907.

She died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on May 27, 1929. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

 

Dorothy Elsie Whilaminna Sands

Dorothy Elsie Whilaminna Sands was born in Vancouver about 1909.

On December 29, 1937, in Vancouver, she married Eric George Ronald Shuker (“Ron”), who was a storekeeper. He was born in Shropshire, England, on January 14, 1907. His parents were Samuel Henry Shuker and Elizabeth Ann Gill.

Ron worked as a merchant in Alert Bay, British Columbia. In 1946, he started a local newspaper called the Pioneer Journal, which he published until 1960.

Ron died in Alert Bay on April 19, 1960. He was buried in Christ Church Cemetery in Alert Bay.

Dorothy continued to live in Alert Bay. She carried on publishing the Pioneer Journal, along with her sons Ronald and Reginald, until 1963.

Dorothy continued to live in Alert Bay for many years.

 

Eileen Helen Jean Sands

Eileen Helen Jean Sands was born in British Columbia on April 14, 1911.

She died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on August 18, 1912.

 

Hugh Mervyn Sands

Hugh Mervyn Sands (often called “Mervyn”) was born in White Rock, British Columbia, on June 12, 1914. (Some sources say he was born in New Westminster.)

For a time he worked as a hospital attendant.

On November 12, 1937, in the Edmonds district of Burnaby, British Columbia, he married Elsie Mabel Davies-Chancellor. She was born in Cumberland, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, on September 2, 1915. Her parents were Frank Chancellor and Charlotte Rebecca Taylor.

Elsie died on May 12, 1976, at her home on the S. & S. Ranch, which was on Loon Lake Road, near Cache Creek, British Columbia.

Mervyn continued to live on Loon Lake Road until the early 1990s. He worked for a time as a commercial bookkeeper. He died in Ashcroft, British Columbia, on April 19, 1991.
