Beatty, Alex

Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1917, page 364 [edited image].

Alex Beatty lived at 1905 Beach Avenue in 1917 and 1918.

The directories gave no occupation for him, and he did not appear anywhere else in the Vancouver directories in the two years before and after 1917 and 1918.

It appears that he was Alexander Beatty, a realtor from Penticton, British Columbia who lived briefly in Vancouver.

Family Background and Early Life

Alexander Beatty was born in Stanhope, Haliburton, Ontario on July 28, 1865. His parents were Joseph Beatty and Ann Jane Morton.

On August 11, 1898 in Dryden, Ontario, Alexander married Martha Harriet McPhail (nee Taylor). She was born in Stanhope, Ontario in 1868. Her parents were William Nelson Taylor and Sophia Jane Dawson.

For several years, Alexander and Martha lived in the Rainy River area of Ontario.

To Calgary

It appears that the Beatty family lived for a time in Calgary, Alberta. Alexander may have operated a grocery store in Calgary in 1909.

Calgary Herald, July 3, 1909, page 7, column 1.

To Penticton

By 1911, the Beattys were in Penticton, British Columbia. Alexander was a real estate agent.

Possibly to Vancouver

A society notice appeared in the Vancouver Sun on December 4, 1916, announcing that the Beatty family had moved from Penticton to Vancouver.

Vancouver Sun, December 4, 1916, page 3, column 2.

Return to Penticton

It appears that the Beattys stayed in Vancouver for only a short time.

In the fall of 1917, the provincial government appointed Alexander Beatty of Penticton to be a deputy warden.

Vancouver Sun, September 1, 1917, page 12, column 2.
