Hugh Washburn Steven 1920- 2014, Pacific Grove, CA; Published in The Monterey Herald on Oct. 19, 2014; http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/montereyherald/obituary.aspx?n=hugh-washburn-steven&pid=172847727:

“Hugh Steven was born in Vancouver, Canada in 1920 and made his way with his family to the San Francisco Bay Area and UC Berkeley in the 1930s. He served in the U.S. Army for four years after war was declared in December, 1941. After the war, he worked in San Francisco as a CPA until 1954 when he and his wife Phyllis moved to Pacific Grove with their children, Heidi and David, where he became controller of the family business, Holman’s Department Store. He eventually became Chairman of the Board until he engineered the sale of the store to Ford’s Department store in 1985, at which point he retired.

In his teens, Hugh had spent successive summers of up to 8 weeks traveling with friends and his father in the High Sierra Mountains, traveling on foot and horseback, attended by pack mules, a guide, a cook and a cowboy to help with the stock. In later years, he rafted most of the runnable rivers in Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California, including the mighty Carmel and Big Sur Rivers. He loved to swim in rivers and lakes.

After his retirement, he spent the next 20 years traveling around the country and the world with his new wife, also Phyllis.

Hugh will be remembered for his kindness, integrity, generosity (among other gifts, he donated his home to the Hospice of Central Coast) and the love he felt for family and friends. He is survived by 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren.

A private celebration of his life will be held this winter.”
