Charles McWilliams James was a commercial traveller who lived at 1995 Beach Avenue in 1908.

 

Early Life

Charles McWilliams James was born in Toronto, Ontario on August 16, 1876. His parents were William Edward James (1848-1913) and Mary Jane McWilliams (1851-1895). William James was a cabinet maker and piano maker.

In 1881, Charles was living with his parents in Toronto.

In 1891, the James family was in Oshawa, Ontario.

By 1901, Charles was in Rapid City, about 30 kilometres north of Brandon, Manitoba.

To Vancouver

Charles first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1902.

He was boarding with the family of Thomas Benson Godfrey, who lived at 1112 Melville Street.

He worked as a warehouseman for the Canadian Rubber Company.

From 1903 to 1906, Charles was boarding with the Godfrey family, whose address was 1118 Melville Street.

In 1904, Charles was a witness at the marriage of his sister, Edna Mary James, to Frederick Harold Godfrey.

Charles continued as the representative of the Canadian Rubber Company.

In the summer of 1905, Charles became an agent for the Berlin Rubber Company, which was based in Berlin, Ontario. (Berlin changed its name to Kitchener in 1916.)

Later in 1905, Charles was a commercial traveller for Chambers & James.

(James Chambers and Company lasted only a year. In 1907, Mr. Chambers was in another short-lived business with William Currie, who roomed at the Commercial Hotel.)

In 1907, Charles moved to a boarding house at 311 Smithe Street.

In 1908, he was at 1995 Beach Avenue.

 

Charles died in Winnipeg, Manitoba on July 18, 1908.
