Elizabeth Ann Hirst was the wife of George Hirst. She lived at 1909 Beach Avenue from 1917 to 1921.

Elizabeth Ann Hirst was born Elizabeth Ann Wellwood in Liverpool, England, on April 21 1868. Her parents were Thomas Wellwood (1845-1881) and Charlotte Ann Blythe (1846-1902).

Elizabeth was living in England with her parents in 1871 and 1881. By 1890 she was in Nanaimo, British Columbia.

On July 1, 1890, in Nanaimo, Elizabeth married George Hirst, who was a merchant. He was born in Nanaimo, on April 18, 1870. His parents were John Hirst (1827-1882) and Harriet (1831-1897), who were pioneers in Nanaimo.

In 1892, George was a teamster with the general merchant firm of Hirst Brothers.

By August 1894, George and his brother, John, had run into financial difficulties. They assigned their property to Coral Novello Westwood and Joseph Phrys Planta, who were to distribute the property to George’s and John’s creditors.

The creditors agreed to extend the time for re-payment, and John Hirst took over the business.

It appears that George was a miner in Nanaimo in 1901.

In 1911 George and Elizabeth were living in Nanaimo. George was a driver for a store.

In May 1917, a fire did minor damage to the Hirst family house in Nanaimo.

Elizabeth appeared at 1909 Beach Avenue in the Vancouver directories from 1917 to 1921. It is not clear where George was living during this period.

According to the 1922 Vancouver, directory, Elizabeth was a widow, living at 6474 St Catherine Street.

There is little information for George and Elizabeth from 1922 to 1940.

George was living in Nanaimo when his brother, Albert, died in 1934.

George died in Victoria, British Columbia, on May 31, 1941. He was buried in Colwood Burial Park.

Elizabeth died in Victoria, British Columbia, on May 14, 1947. She was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park in Royal Oak, British Columbia.

Elizabeth and George had the following children.

 

Ada Mary Hirst

Ada Mary Hirst was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on April 21, 1891.

On October 12, 1915, in Nanaimo, she married John Oscar Erlandson, who was a salesman. He was born in Roslyn, Washington State, on February 28, 1891. His parents were Andrew Erlandson and Anna Olson.

John died in San Diego, California on April 9, 1964.

Ada died in San Diego on July 6, 1973.

 

Edwin Blythe Hirst

Edwin Blythe Hirst was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on April 2, 1906. (He was sometimes called “George”; mostly he was “Edwin.”)

On November 3, 1928, in Vancouver, he married Ethel May Fulcher, who was a music teacher. She was born in Extension, British Columbia, on January 1, 1905. Her parents were John Fulcher and Mary Ellen Thompson.

Edwin and Ethel lived in Seattle, Washington for most of their married life.

Edwin died in Seattle on November 19, 1988.

Ethel died in Seattle on April 27, 1991.
