Sutherland, John Knox (1870-1937)

John Knox Sutherland was a pharmacist. He lived at 1901 Barclay Street from 1904 to 1937.

He was born in Belleville, Ontario, on May 22, 1870. His father was William Sutherland (about 1838-1899). His mother was Mary B. Phippen (1840-1902). He had an older sister, Jessie Sutherland (1868-1962).

In 1891, John was a student of pharmacy in Belleville, Ontario. By 1892 the Vancouver directory showed him living with his father, William, at 521 Hornby Street in Vancouver. William was a tax collector. John was working as a druggist at Henry McDowell’s drug store at 10-12 Cordova Street.

By 1895, John had established his own drug store in the 500 block of Westminster Avenue (later called Main Street).

In 1901, John amalgamated his business with Charles Nelson (1862-1926), Robert G. MacPherson (1866-1926) and John Walter Morrow (1879-1911).

Although the business had seven stores in the Vancouver area, it was not successful, and the partnership ended around 1903.

In April 1904, in Montreal, Quebec, John married Lily May Burton. She was born in Belleville, Ontario, on May 21 [or 31], 1876. Her father was Reverend John Burton (1834-1897). Her mother was Mary Ann Miller (about 1839-1893).

John and Lily lived in Vancouver for all of their married life.

John carried on in the pharmacy business for some time, although by 1910 the Vancouver directory described him as “retired.”

It appears that John also owned properties in downtown Vancouver. The Heritage Vancouver database of building permits includes these two permits for buildings owned by J.K. Sutherland.
