Archibald (“Archie”) Leroy Clements was the general yardmaster for the Canadian Pacific Railway. He lived at 1020 Denman Street in 1908.

Archibald Leroy Clements was born in Haverhill, Massachusetts, on October 17 1871. His father was John Clements (1821-1896), who was born in Newfoundland. His mother was Sarah Ann Jeness (1837-1913). (Her surname sometimes appears as “Jones.”). (In 1911, George Allen Davidson and his family, who lived at 952 Denman Street in 1905, were lodging with Sarah at 1200 Bidwell Street.)

In 1880 the Clements family was living in San Francisco, California. They arrived in British Columbia about 1881, and they lived on Vancouver Island for a short time.

Archie later worked as a timekeeper for the Canadian Pacific Railway, including some time at Ashcroft and at Port Hammond.

On October 25, 1892, in New Westminster, Archie married Ruth Mount Ogle. She was born in Dixon, Illinois, on May 25, 1868. Her father was Joseph Ogle (1839-1920). Her mother was Mary Mount (1841-1915).

In 1898, Archie was involved in mining in the Lillooet mining district.

In 1899, Archie became the agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway at Grand Forks, British Columbia.

He served as an alderman and he was a member of the Oddfellows lodge (“I.O.O.F.”).

In 1907, Archie became an agent for the Canadian Pacific Railway in Vancouver.

In 1908 he was promoted to the position of general freight agent in Vancouver.

He later became the wharf manager for Evans, Coleman & Evans Ltd.

From 1926 to 1937 he was the assistant manager of Union Steamships Ltd.

He served on the North Vancouver School Board for eighteen years, along with several terms on the General Hospital Board.

Archie died in North Vancouver on January 13, 1938. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ruth died in North Vancouver on December 9, 1954. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Archie and Ruth had the following children.

 

Ruth Jeanette Clements

Ruth Jeanette Clements was born in Vancouver on November 23, 1898.

On July 7, 1921, in Vancouver, she married Newton Phillips Steacy, who was a commercial traveller with the W.H. Malkin Company. He was born in Vancouver on October 30, 1896. His father was Albert Richard Steacy (1859-1926), who was a school teacher. Newton’s mother was Frances Adelaide Phillips (1862-1923).

Newton later became a local manager for Borden Co. Ltd. From 1956 to 1960 he was the Minister of Agriculture in the Social Credit government. After leaving politics, Newton was British Columbia’s trade commissioner in San Francisco.

Newton died in Marin County, California, on July 7, 1969.

Ruth died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on September 20, 1969.

Newton and Ruth had four children: Ruth A. Steacy; Archie M. Steacy, Newton Clements Steacy and Gerald Phillips Steacy.

 

Beatrice Gertrude Clements

Beatrice Gertrude Clements was born about 1901 in British Columbia. (She may have been called “Dorothy” in the 1901 Canada census. Dorothy was born in British Columbia on March 17, 1901.)

Beatrice died in Vancouver on February 8, 1908. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

He did considerable contracting in the way of station building on the C.P.R. and was sometimes spoken of as foreman on construction of buildings. He was superintending the erection of a new station at Laurie on the Illecillewaet, near where the Horne-Payne party are carrying on mining operations. He was taken ill and came down to North Bend on No. 1 last Tuesday. Dr. Weld, who happened to be on his way home from the East, attended him but it was evident that his days were numbered, his heart having become functionally disordered. He died this morning. The funeral arrangements have not yet been made. Deceased was known to many citizens who will deeply regret his demise and will extend sympathy to his bereaved widow and family.”

Joseph Ogle, obituary, Vancouver Sun, May 31, 1920, page 3:

“Joseph Ogle, of 362 Tenth street, North Vancouver, died after a severe illness Sunday morning, in his 81st year.

The late Mr. Ogle was born in Derbyshire, England, and came to this country in 1863, when he settled in Dubuque Town, where he conducted a manufacturing business until 1891, when he came to British Columbia, and subsequently settled in Sardis. There he conducted a general store until 1908, after which he made his home with his daughter, Mrs. A.L. Clements, North Vancouver.

His wife died May 25, 1915. He is survived by eight children, two sons and six daughters—Edmund Ogle, Toronto, Ont.; George N. Ogle, Kamloops; Mrs. J.A. McCallum, Seattle, Wn.; Mrs. J.H. Schletz, Dubuque town; Mrs. A.L. Clements, North Vancouver; Mrs. W.H. Lune, Vancouver,; Mrs. J.H. Smart, New Westminster; and Mrs. M.W. Clements, Milton, Ont.

Mr. Ogle was a lifelong member of the Methodist church and a member of the I.O.O.F., which he joined 50 years ago.

The funeral will take place on Tuesday at 2 p.m. from the Firswt Methodist church, and will be conducted by the North Vancouver Lodge of Oddfellows.”
