William Doherty Carter was a lawyer who lived at 1830 Comox Street from 1912 to 1916.

 

Early Life

William Doherty Carter was born in Bouctouche, New Brunswick, on October 5, 1862. His parents were  James Carter and  Margaret Doherty.

William attended the University of New Brunswick and Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and he was a school teacher for a short time.

He studied law in the office of Henry Robert Emmerson, (1853 –1914), a lawyer and politician who was Premier of New Brunswick and a federal cabinet minister. [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henry_Emmerson].

 

Marriage and Life in New Brunswick

William was first married to Emma Phinney, who died in 1893.

On July 1, 1897, in Kent County, New Brunswick, William married Mary Stevenson. She was born in January 1874 in Richebucto, New Brunswick. Her parents were James Stevenson and Margaret McDermid.

He was called to the New Brunswick bar in 1889, and he became a King’s Counsel in New Brunswick in 1907.

 

To British Columbia

William and Mary  arrived in British Columbia in 1912, and William established a law practice with Matheson Mackenzie (1879-1953).

In 1918, William became the inspector of legal offices in British Columbia. In 1921, he became deputy attorney general for British Columbia.

Mary died in Victoria on January 14, 1925. She was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

In 1928, William became the official public administrator for Vancouver, a position which he held until he retired in 1936.

William died in Vancouver on November 10, 1937. He was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

William and Emma Phinney had the following children.

 

Lelia Alma Carter

Lelia Alma Carter was born on May 5, 1888, in Richibucto, New Brunswick. She married Harry W. Jakeman, and they lived in Massachusetts.

Lelia died in Massachusetts in 1968.

 

Margaret Elizabeth Carter

Margaret Elizabeth Carter was born in Kent County, New Brunswick on  February 22, 1890.

She died in Kent County, New Brunswick on September 27, 1892.

 

William and Margaret Stevenson  had the following children.

 

Deena Agnes Carter

Deena Agnes Carter was born on June 19, 1898, in Richibucto, New Brunswick.

She died in Victoria, British Columbia on August 17, 1920.

 

Margaret Verne Carter

Margaret Verne Carter was born in Kent County, New Brunswick on July 21, 1901.

She died in New Brunswick on September 20, 1902.

 

Rae Williamina Carter

Rae Williamina Carter (sometimes “Wilhelmina”) was born in Kent County, New Brunswick on June 27, 1903.

She married Carl Salander.

She died in Orange County, California, on August 7, 1996.

  2. A very comprehensive statement of research related to William Doherty Carter and family. I am a third cousin, three generations removed. I have appreciated information about which I was previously unaware.
