Dick led a remarkable life, beginning with the death of his father in WWI when he was an infant. Along with his brother Erroll he was raised with love and adventure by his mother, Esmee (Betty) McCallum, who took the boys along on her many lapidary and mountain-climbing adventures. Dick attended the Vancouver College, and met his future wife at a dance held at the Alma Academy. Dick and Lorraine Vervais were married on April 19, 1943 in beautiful Christ Church Cathedral at Georgia and Burrard. Dick was a talented dancer and singer and spent some time in Hollywood working in this field before the second world war required him to return home. During the war he worked in the R.C.A.F. as a communications instructor, and later at the Square D Electric Company as a senior manager. He retired in 1983. Along the way Dick and Lorraine had three children, Richard, Eric, and Betty, and Eric made them proud with their only grandchild, Ross. Dick and Lorraine were instrumental in founding the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped, and have been active lifetime members working to improve opportunities and quality of life for the mentally challenged. Dick spent his last eighteen months at the Evergreen Care Facility. The kind staff there said Dick never lost his love for music or his concern for his family. Dick was a gentle, caring person who believed in old-fashioned values like honour and duty. We love him very much, and he will be missed tremendously by his family. Donations to the North Shore Association for the Mentally Handicapped, 1070 Roosevelt Crescent, North Vancouver, V7P 1M3, in lieu of flowers, would be appreciated. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at the Boal Chapel of First Memorial Services, 1505 Lillooet Road, North Vancouver, on Saturday, November 19, 2005 at 2:00. Funeral Home: Boal Chapel and Memorial Gardens; 1505 Lillooet Road North Vancouver, BC V7J2J1; (604) 990-8988.”

Her childhood straddled both pre and post-Depression eras and in 1943, during World War 2 she married Richard McCallum. They lived in Hamilton, Ontario where he was an instructor during the war. She was widowed in 2005. They made their home in the Capilano Highlands area in North Vancouver where they had many good, close friends and helped create an idyllic 1950’s era childhood for their three children. Lorraine and her husband were instrumental in establishing what was then called the Association for the Mentally Retarded in order to assist their son who was born with Down’s syndrome.

She always made our family home a welcoming place for all the neighbourhood children. The result of her welcoming ways was that her mentally handicapped son was included in all the neighbourhood activities, and our childhood years were spent in a special, loving and inclusive place. This was during a time when including the mentally challenged in such ordinary things was not common. Lorraine also completed a University degree at a time when education for married mothers was not encouraged, and she completed her degree in Education at SFU. She taught at Caulfeild Elementary school in West Vancouver, and loved her time there. After her husband died she moved to Crescent Gardens in South Surrey to live nearer to her daughter and son-in-law. She thrived both as a teacher and as a mother. She was a strong-willed yet gentle and kind woman; beautiful both inside and out. We miss her keenly.

Thank you to the caring, kind staff at Morgan Place Care Home for all the many ways they helped to make her last few months comfortable.
