Kendall, George Albert (1871-1942)

George Albert Kendall was a real estate broker. He lived at 1881 Beach Avenue from 1916 to 1920.

He was born on March 9, 1871, in Essex, England. His father was Thomas Kendall (1847-1887) who was a baker and dealer in wheat (called “corn” in England). George’s mother was Clara Eliza Cobell (1847-1933).

By 1890, George was living in Poplar, an area in East London. He was an auctioneer and real estate agent.

He also arranged loans and investments in real estate.

It appears that George married Priscilla White Rose near the end of 1895. She was born in 1872 in West Bergholt, near Colchester, Essex. Her father was Moss Rose (1841-1919), who was a blacksmith. Priscilla’s mother was Mary Ann Seaborn (1839-1921).

Although the information is not conclusive, George may have been the stock and share broker named George Albert Kendall who got into legal difficulties in early 1896. He was charged with obtaining money by false pretences, and with the intent to defraud. He allegedly obtained money for shares that he did not deliver; in other cases he obtained shared for sale but he did not pay over the proceeds. His broker’s certificate was cancelled in February. In March 1896, he pleaded guilty and received a sentence of nine months’ hard labour.

In 1901, George Albert Kendall, the financial agent, became bankrupt. (The administration of the bankruptcy estate lasted until at least 1917.)

“Failure of a Stock and Share Dealer,” The Financial Times (London, England), Wednesday, February 20, 1901; page 2; Edition 3,988.

In the 1901 England and Wales census, George and Priscilla were living in Low Leyton, Essex, England. George was working as an auctioneer. It appears that they had two children: Cyril Welbey Kendall (born 1896) and Violette Clara Rose Kendall (1899-1987).

In 1902 an auctioneer named George Albert Kendall pleaded guilty to being drunk in Colchester, Essex. He received a fine of five shillings, and he also had to pay four shillings and six pence in costs. (Despite the similarity in name and occupation, it is not absolutely certain that this is the same person.)

It appears that the marriage of George and Priscilla ended, possibly in divorce. In 1904, Priscilla White Kendall married Terence McHugh, who had served in the Boer War. Terence was killed in 1918 while serving as a veterinary quartermaster with the British military. Priscilla lived in England until she died in 1960.

George A. Kendall first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was a broker, living at 428 East Tenth Avenue.

(There was another George Kendall who was in Vancouver a year earlier, in 1907. He was a travelling salesman for the wholesale firm of G.R. Gregg and Company of Winnipeg, who sold Japanese silks and other goods. It is not clear if this is the same person, but the residences in 1907 and 1908 were only about one block apart.)

George Albert Kendall appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1908 428 East 10th Avenue
1909 1925 West 9th Avenue
1910 to 1912 3058 Woodland Drive
1913 Vanness Avenue and Commercial Drive
1914 1779 Stainesbury Avenue
1915 no listing under Vancouver names
1916 to 1920 1881 Beach Avenue (active service in 1917 and 1918)
1921 1779 East 21st Avenue
1922 3391 Templeton Drive
1923 no listing under Vancouver names
1924 1732 Alberni Street (possible connection)
1925 6854 Inverness Street
1926 to 1935 2353 West 8th Avenue

By 1911, George was at 3058 Woodland Drive in Vancouver. According to the 1911 Canada census, his wife was Ida Kendall, and he had two children: Elizabeth Kendall (born about 1909) and Clara Kendall (born about 1910).

In 1916, George enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force to serve during the First World War.

From 1916 to 1920, George was at 1881 Beach Avenue in the Vancouver directory. (In 1917 and 1918 the directory said that he was on “active service.”)

According to the 1921 Canada census, George was at 1779 East 20th Avenue (although the 1921 directory said his address was 1779 East 21st Avenue). George was living with Ida, who was described as his wife. There were now three children: Elizabeth (born about 1909); Clara (born about 1910); and George (born about 1912).

It appears that George and Ida did not formally get married until January 16, 1925. In the marriage certificate, George described himself as a widower; Ida said that she had never been married before. Ida was born in Holland on March 19, 1881, as Ida Anna Marie Kym. Her father was Johannus (John William) Kym. Her mother was Elizabeth Van Haaften (or Haaftin).

By 1926, the Vancouver directory described George as “retired.” It appears that he developed tuberculosis at some point. He died in Vancouver on March 17, 1942. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Ida died in Vancouver on April 10, 1962.

George and Ida had the following children.

Clara Georgia Kendall

Clara Georgia Kendall was born in Vancouver on March 1, 1910. She married Bernhard A. Sindberg.

Clara died in Vancouver on April 20, 1974.

George Thomas Kendall

George Thomas Kendall was born in Vancouver on March 10, 1912. He was a torpedoman with the Royal Canadian Navy.

He married Juliette Marie Pepin. She was born in Hull, Quebec, on April 12, 1908. Her father was Joseph A. Pepin.

George died in Youbou, British Columbia, on March 25, 1941. He was buried in the Veterans Cemetery in Esquimalt, British Columbia.
