On November 24, 1870 in Carroll, Illinois, Alpheus married Alice Zoe Wright. She was born in Stourport, Worcestershire, England on July 9, 1852.

In 1871, Alpheus received a patent for an improved copy-holder.

In 1880, Alpheus was a defendant in a lawsuit for patent infringement relating to fountain hose carriages.

The Inter Ocean (Chicago, Illinois), March 30, 1880, page 6, column 2.

The case was resolved in 1886. The United States Supreme Court held that Mr. Preston’s claim for a patent could not succeed, because it did not describe a new invention.

Alice Manard died on March 6, 1892. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Rockford, Illinois.

Alpheus died on December 25, 1900 in Chicago, Illinois. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Rockford.

Sidney: Early Business

For much of his life, Sidney Manard was involved in various types of sales programs. His sales tactics were often aggressive, and he sometimes found himself in legal and financial difficulties.

In the late 1890s, he had an insurance agency in Rockford.

Marriage to Elsie Russell

By 1899, Sidney had established a real estate business in Republic City, Washington (about 100 kilometres northwest of Spokane). (Republic’s earlier name of “Eureka” was related to the town’s early mining history: see Republic: Thumbnail History; https://historylink.org/File/9050.)

In June 1899, a fire damaged much of the town, including the building that housed Sidney’s real estate office.

The Boundary Creek Times, June 10, 1899, page 3, column 2; https://open.library.ubc.ca/collections/bcnewspapers/xboundarycr/items/1.0170426#p2z0r0f:

Within days after the fire, Sidney had arranged to construct a new brick building in downtown Republic.

Seattle Post-Intelligencer, June 15, 1899, page 8, column 1.

On June 4, 1900, Sidney married Elsie Lee Russell. The marriage was in Ferry County, Washington, probably in the town of Republic. At the time of the 1900 United States census, Sidney and Elsie were living with Elsie’s parents in Republic City.

Belvidere Daily Republican (Belvidere, Illinois), June 9, 1900, page 3, column 4.

Elsie was born on May 15, 1882 in Maize, Kansas. Her parents were Samuel T. Russell (1858-1910) and Alice M. Boone (1862-1931).

By 1904, Sidney and Elsie were in Ilwaco, Washington, which is at the mouth of the Columbia River.

Oregon Daily Journal (Portland, Oregon), September 9, 1903, page 7, column 6.

In 1908, Sidney and Elsie were involved in a marital dispute that involved accusations of infidelity, kidnapping and blackmail.

On June 7, 1913 in Seattle, Elsie married Andrew J. Isaacson, who worked in a steel mill. He was born in Nevada on September 15, 1889.

Elsie died in Seattle on March 10, 1953.

Andrew died in Seattle on May 4, 1978.

Marriage to Clara Ostfeld

On November 7, 1911, in Tacoma, Washington, Sidney married Clara R. Ostfeld.

Journal and Tribune (Knoxville, Tennessee), November 22, 1911, page 9, columns 1-2.

Clara was born in Vienna, Austria (although some sources describe her as being born in Tennessee). Her parents were Nathan Ostfeld (1856-1909) and Huga (Hattie) Sherer (1859-1941).

To Vancouver

Sidney (probably along with Clara) arrived in Vancouver on June 13, 1912, and he began working as a financial broker. He registered himself with the United States vice consul general in Vancouver.

Name: Sidney Theo Manard; Birth Date: 22 Sep 1875; Birth Place: Rockford, Illinois; Spouse: Clara Ostfelt; Residence: 777 Burrard St., Vancouver, B. C., Canada; Civil Date: 3 Feb 1915.

Sidney (probably with Clara) lived in at least two apartment buildings in Vancouver, including Caroline Court at 1058 Nelson Street and the Irwinton Apartments at 777 Burrard Street.

Canadian Home Investment Company

In 1913, Sidney was looking to buy contracts of the Canadian Home Investment Company (sometimes abbreviated to “C.H.I.C.”).

The Canadian Home Investment Company was incorporated in British Columbia on March 21, 1910.

Vancouver Province, April 15, 1910, page 26, column 6.

British Columbia Gazette, April 14, 1910, page 3016; https://archive.org/details/governmentgazett50nogove_m5k0/page/3016 [first portion of certificate].

The company issued investment contracts with an accumulation plan. The annual interest rate was five percent, and a borrower had ten years and six months to repay the loan in monthly instalments.

Edmonton Daily Bulletin, May 15, 1911, page 2, columns 3-7; http://contentdm.ucalgary.ca/digital/collection/p22007coll2/id/59280/ [portion of article].

It appears that a secondary market developed for the investment contracts. Brokers like Sidney Manard would pay a bonus to buy the contracts from the original borrowers.

Sidney’s business address was in apartment 103 in Sylvia Court.

Sylvia Court, detail from An August day at English Bay, Vancouver B.C., about 1914, Vancouver City Archives, Be P144.2; http://searcharchives.vancouver.ca/august-day-at-english-bay-vancouver-b-c-2.

His earliest advertisements gave Sylvia Court’s address as 1895 Beach Avenue.

Vancouver Daily World, May 3, 1913, page 30, column 6.

Later he used 1885 Beach Avenue as the address.

Vancouver Province, June 19, 1913, page 19, column 1.

He did not restrict his activities to British Columbia; he also advertised elsewhere in western Canada.

Winnipeg Tribune, January 9, 1914, page 14, column 6.

Some of his advertisements offered interest rates of five percent per month.

Vancouver Daily World, October 4, 1913, page 20, column 1.

An economic recession arrived in Vancouver in 1913. Like many enterprises based on real estate development, the Canadian Home Investment Company did not last long.

By the end of 1914, the Canadian Home Investment Company had become insolvent, and the creditors were petitioning the court to wind up the company.

Vancouver Province, December 11, 1914, page 13, column 1.

The winding-up proceedings did take place, and a liquidator disposed of the company’s assets.

To California

Sidney did not remain in Vancouver for long.

According to the 1914 directory for Santa Monica, California, he was living at 1009 Ocean Front in Venice, California, and he was operating a confectionery.

Santa Monica, California, City Directory, 1914, page 217.

Return to Washington State

Sidney later moved back to Washington State. When he registered with the United States military draft system in 1918, he was living in Seattle, and he was working as a railway clerk.

By April 1919, he was the manager of a public market in Seattle.

Seattle Star, April 12, 1919, page 3, column 4.

In 1919, Clara separated from Sidney, and the court ordered him to pay interim maintenance to her.

Seattle Star, June 12, 1919, page 5, column 5.

By the time of the 1920 United States census, Clara was living in Seattle, along with her seven-year-old son, Nathan.

In 1920, Sidney and the “Manard Rental Agency” were promoting a plan for co-operative apartments.

Seattle Star, January 24, 1920, page 1, column 3 [first portion of article].

Seattle Star, March 31, 1920, page 11, column 3.

In May 1920, Sidney asked the court to grant a divorce from Clara. He alleged that Clara had moved 20 times to keep him from seeing their son, Nathan. (It appears that the divorce did occur somewhat later.)

Seattle Star, May 8, 1920, page 9, column 6.

In July 1920, the Manard Rental Agency discontinued its house rental department.

Seattle Star, July 21, 1920, page 12, column 2.

In September 1920, Sidney was facing a charge of grand larceny. However, he failed to appear for his trial. The court declared that his bail bondsmen had to forfeit the bail of $1,000.

Seattle Star, September 30, 1920, page 14, column 4 [repaired image].

Sidney fled to British Columbia. In April 1921, the British Columbia court ordered him to be extradited to the United States to face the grand larceny charges.

Victoria Daily Times, April 6, 1921, page 3, columns 6-7.

The outcome of the grand larceny charge is not available.

By 1922, Seattle stores were selling a line of toys that Sidney had designed.

Marriage to Edna Parker

On May 12, 1927, in Tacoma, Washington, Sidney married Edna Alberta Parker (1899-1995). She was born in MacLeod, Alberta. Her parents were Edward Augustus Parker (1856-1924) and Catherine Hamilton Webster (1873-1933).

Sidney and Edna moved to Vancouver in the late 1920s.

The 1929 Vancouver directory said that Sidney was the sales manager for Intermountain Building and Loan Association of Canada. He was living in the Seabright Apartments at 1870 Yew Street.

(After a series of corporate re-organizations, the company was in liquidation in the late 1930s.)

In 1930, Sidney was a sales manager for James Frederick Erskine, who was a building contractor.

It appears that Sidney’s and Edna’s marriage ended in divorce.

Edna later married William Anthony Heitman (1885-1944) and Leon Samuel Woolington (1887-1976).

Edna died on February 7, 1995 in Seal Beach, California.

In September 1930, Sidney was convicted in British Columbia of obtaining money by false pretenses.

It appears that Sidney died in California in the 1950s. It is likely, though not certain, that the following two sources refer to Sidney Theodore Manard.

The California death index says that a Sidney Menard died in San Francisco on December 13, 1954.

The Find A Grave index says that Sidney T. Manard was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Rockford, Illinois in 1957, although it does not provide a date or place for Sidney’s death.
