Rogers, Clara Augusta (1832-1910)

Clara Augusta Rogers was the widow of Samuel Blythe Rogers. She was the mother of several prominent Vancouver citizens, including Benjamin Tingley Rogers (1865-1918). Clara lived at 1017 Denman Street from 1904 to 1906.

Clara Augusta Rogers was born Clara Augusta Dupuy on September 4, 1832, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her father was John Dupuy (1789-1865), who was a merchant in Philadelphia. Clara’s mother was Mary Richards Haskins.

Clara married Samuel Blythe Rogers in Philadelphia on April 16, 1863. Samuel was born on January 13, 1835. Samuel died in New Orleans, Louisiana, on February 6, 1883.

Clara came to Vancouver about 1891. She first appeared in the Vancouver directory in 1896.

In 1903, Clara hired the architect Samuel Maclure to design a house at 1017 Denman Street.

She lived in the Denman Street house until about 1906. She later lived at 2045 Barclay Street, the home of her daughter, Emma, who was married to Lewis Griffith McPhillips.

Clara died in Vancouver on May 22, 1910.

Samuel Blythe Rogers

Samuel Blythe Rogers was born in Philadelphia on February 14, 1864. He was a lawyer in New York. He did not marry. He died on May 30, 1893.

 

Benjamin Tingley Rogers

Benjamin Tingley Rogers was born in Philadelphia on October 21, 1865. He became a sugar manufacturer in Vancouver. On June 1, 1892, in Victoria, British Columbia, he married Mary Isabella Angus (1869-1965), who was a patron of the arts in Vancouver. Benjamin died in Vancouver on June 18, 1918.

 

Clara Augusta Dupuy Rogers

Clara Augusta Dupuy Rogers was born on in Philadelphia on August 11, 1867. On August 10, 1898, in Vancouver, she married Leslie Havelock Wright (1868-1948), who was an insurance agent. They lived at 1865 Barclay Street from 1902 to 1910. Clara died in Vancouver on February 5, 1944. Leslie died in Vancouver on April 28, 1948. Lawrence Thornton Rogers

Lawrence Thornton Rogers was born in Philadelphia on September 6, 1868. On December 29, 1899, at San Rafael, California, he married Emma Catherine Segetten (or Segleken). She was born in Germany on October 8, 1864.

Emma died in Vancouver on March 5, 1934.

On April 5, 1936, Lawrence married Nan Leatherton in Los Angeles, California.

Lawrence died in Vancouver on January 20, 1949.

 

Theodore Havemeyer Rogers

Theodore Havemeyer Rogers was born in Philadelphia on October 6, 1873. He did not marry. He died in Los Angeles, California on April 5, 1894.

 

Emma Louisa Rogers

Emma Louisa Rogers was born at Oakley Plantation, Louisiana, on September 26, 1875.

On September 22, 1903, she married Lewis Griffith McPhillips, who was a lawyer. He was born on March 12, 1859, in Richmond Hill, Ontario. Lewis and Emma lived at 2045 Barclay Street.

It appears that Emma died in 1926, possibly in Italy. She was buried in the Verano Monumental Cemetery in Rome; https://veranomonumentalcemetery.wordpress.com/2016/04/25/ex-evangelici/: Emma Louise McPhillips, wife of Lewis Griffith McPhillips…of Vancouver (1876-1926).

Lewis died in Vancouver on September 2, 1945.
