Lang, Hugh (1887-1951)

Hugh Lang was an accountant and insurance agent who lived at 2046 Beach Avenue in 1913, 1918 and 1920; at 1154 Gilford Street in 1915 and 1916; and at 2061 Beach Avenue in 1919.

Hugh Lang was born on December 27, 1887 (some sources say 1888) in Glasgow, Scotland. His father was William Galloway Lang (1846-1897), who was a distiller.

Hugh’s mother was Agnes Young.

Hugh arrived in Canada in May 1909; his destination was Vernon, British Columbia. By 1911, he was living in Reiswig, which is east of Vernon.

Hugh first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1913. He was an employee of the office outfitting firm of Webster Hanna Company.

On September 29, 1914, in Vancouver, Hugh married Agnes Wilson Tozer, who was a stenographer. She was born in Beckenham, Kent, England, on March 27, 1889. Her father was William Tozer. Her mother was Agnes Mary Parry. The wedding was at 1859 Pendrell Street, the home of Rev. Edward Leslie Pidgeon, who performed the wedding ceremony.

During their first decade in Vancouver, Hugh and Agnes lived at the following addresses.

Hugh continued to work as an accountant. He died in Vancouver on September 24, 1951. He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver.

Agnes died in North Vancouver on May 1, 1973. She was buried in Capilano View Cemetery in West Vancouver.

Hugh and Agnes had the following children.

 

William Gordon Lang

William Gordon Lang was born in Vancouver on January 2, 1916.

He worked as a clerk.

He died in North Vancouver on August 9, 1940.

He was buried in Capilano View Cemetery.

 

Mary Doreen Lang

Mary Doreen Lang was born in Vancouver in the early 1920s.

She worked as a stenographer.

She was living in the Vancouver area in 1951 and 1973.
