Jack, George (1864-1918)

George Jack was a baker. He lived at 2040 Beach Avenue from 1903 to 1905, and at 1224 Denman Street in 1906 and 1907.

He was born in Scotland on September 23, 1864. His father was George Jack; his mother was Mary Gardiner.

On July 14, 1887, in Toronto, Ontario, he married Martha Quinn. She was born in Toronto on February 10, 1867. Her father was Thomas Quinn; her mother was Anne Jane Kingsbury.

He arrived in Vancouver about 1903, where he started work as a baker at John Oben’s confectionery, which was at 413 West Hastings Street.

George Jack lived at 2040 Beach Avenue from 1903 to 1905, and then at 1224 Denman Street in 1906. From 1906 to 1918, he lived at 563 East Seventh Avenue.

George died in Vancouver on November 5, 1918. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Martha died in Vancouver on December 30, 1922. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

George and Martha had the following children.

 

Alma Jack

Alma Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 24, 1889. When she was married in Vancouver on July 4, 1918 to James Alexander Jopson, the marriage certificate indicated that Alma was divorced. James Alexander Jopson was born on May 14, 1886, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His father was James Butcher Jopson (1857-1934), who lived at 1180 Denman Street from 1911 to 1912, and at 1216 Denman Street from 1913 to 1916. James Alexander Jopson’s mother was Charlotte Ada Judd (1855-1930).

Alma died in Vancouver on December 3, 1943.

 

George Jack

George Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 7, 1891. He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. On August 23, 1920, in Vancouver, he married Joan Irene Hopkinson. She was born about 1899 in Gravesend, England. Her father was Jack Hopkinson; her mother was Marjory Roberts.

George became a master mariner for the False Creek Tug Service.

George and Joan obtained a legal separation. George died in Vancouver on March 29, 1945. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Elsie Jack

Elsie Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 7, 1897. On April 7, 1919, in Victoria, British Columbia, she married Donald Smith Martrin. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 28, 1875 (or 1876). This marriage ended in divorce on April 30, 1937.

Donald died in Vancouver on October 8, 1962. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Elsie later married John Albert Watts.

Elsie died in Vancouver on April 3, 1967.
