George Jack was a baker. He lived at 2040 Beach Avenue from 1903 to 1905, and at 1224 Denman Street in 1906 and 1907.

 

Early Life

George Jack was born in Scotland on September 23, 1864. His parents were George Jack and Mary Gardiner.

 

Marriage to Martha Quinn

On July 14, 1887, in Toronto, Ontario, George married Martha Quinn. She was born in Toronto on February 10, 1867. Her parents were Thomas Quinn and Anne Jane Kingsbury.

 

To Vancouver

George arrived in Vancouver about 1903, where he started work as a baker at John Oben’s confectionery, which was at 413 West Hastings Street.

George Jack lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

George died in Vancouver on November 5, 1918. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

George and Martha had the following children.

 

Alma Jack

Alma Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario on March 24, 1889.

She was still living with her parents in 1905.

On November 6, 1906, in Bellingham, Washington, Alma married Oliver Henry Raftery. He was born in Launcetown, Tasmania on January 25, 1887. His parents were William Joseph Raftery (1857–1929) and Rosalie Alice Benjamin (1866–1947).

By 1911, Alma’s and Oliver’s marriage had ended. On September 26, 1911, in North Vancouver, British Columbia, Oliver went through a marriage ceremony with Hazel Fern Lowe.

Within weeks, Oliver was charged with bigamy.

The jury was unable to agree on a verdict. The court scheduled a second trial for the spring of 1912.

The results of later legal proceedings are not available. (Oliver later lived in California. He died in Los Angeles on June 16, 1962.)

By 1916, Alma was known as “Mrs. J. A. Jopson.”

However, Alma did not formally marry James Alexander Jopson until July 4, 1918, in New Westminster, British Columbia.

James was born on May 14, 1886, in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His parents were James Butcher Jopson (1857-1934) and Charlotte Ada Judd (1855-1930). The Jopson family lived at 1180 Denman Street from 1911 to 1912, and at 1216 Denman Street from 1913 to 1916.

 

Alma died in Vancouver on December 3, 1943.

Alma and Oliver Raftery had a daughter, Irene A. Raftery. Irene was born in Vancouver on July 29, 1907. She died on February 2, 1977 in Burbank, California.

 

George Jack

George Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 7, 1891.

In 1903, George rescued a boy who had fallen out of a boat at English Bay.

He enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

On August 23, 1920, in Vancouver, George married Joan Irene Hopkinson. She was born about 1899 in Gravesend, England. Her parents were Jack Hopkinson and Marjory Roberts.

George became a master mariner for the False Creek Tug Service.

George and Joan obtained a legal separation.

George died in Vancouver on March 29, 1945. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Elsie Jack

Elsie Jack was born in Toronto, Ontario, on March 7, 1897. On April 7, 1919, in Victoria, British Columbia, she married Donald Smith Martrin. He was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on September 28, 1875 (or 1876). This marriage ended in divorce on April 30, 1937.

Donald died in Vancouver on October 8, 1962. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Elsie later married John Albert Watts.

Elsie died in Vancouver on April 3, 1967.
