On August 15, 1898, he became a naturalized United States citizen.

On February 23, 1900, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Alexander married Blaunche Latimer Howe. She was born in Millerstown, Pennsylvania on August 3, 1877. Her parents were George Coleman Howe (1851-1922) and Mary Elizabeth Johnston (1850-1934).

Real Estate Investments in Western Canada

In the early 1900s, Alexander and the Davidson brothers expanded their activities into the Canadian prairies, especially the Saskatchewan Valley Land Company and the Saskatchewan Valley and Manitoba Land Company. These enterprises, along with other associated businesses, acquired rights to sell vast amounts of Canadian prairie land from the federal government and from railway companies that were active in the area.

These companies encouraged settlement in the area, and they produced significant profits for Alexander and the other investors.

Alexander and his family appeared in the 1905 Minnesota census.

They were in Winnipeg, Manitoba at the time of the 1906 Canadian prairies census.

Arrival in British Columbia

While he was in Winnipeg, Alexander began investing in British Columbia, including fishing and logging businesses.

Blanche Howe McRae

Blanche Howe McRae was born on March 12, 1904.

On July 26, 1922, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Blanche married Richard Plunkett Baker. He was born in Donald, British Columbia, on October 18, 1888. His parents were Frederick Francis Baker (1858-1925) and Lucilla Ismina Cooke (1858-1925).

Richard had served with the Royal Air Force during the First World War. While he was in a battle with Manfred von Richthofen, the “Red Baron,” Richard managed to land his airplane, but German soldiers captured him and made him a prisoner of war. After the war he had returned to Vancouver, where he had an importing and exporting business.

Star Tribune (Minneapolis, Minnesota), July 26, 1922, page 6.

In 1924, Janet Smith, a nursemaid for Richard’s niece, died in mysterious circumstances in Richard’s and Blanche’s house in Shaughnessy Heights. The reason for Janet Smith’s death remained a mystery. After a long and sensational trial, there was no criminal conviction and the case remained officially unsolved.

Richard’s aunt, Lily Lefevre, died in 1938, and Richard and Blanche moved into Lily’s large house on Point Grey Road.

However, Blanche later divorced Richard. (Richard became the manager of the Medical Dental Building in Vancouver, and later moved to Qualicum Beach. Richard died in Vancouver on April 1, 1954. He was buried in Qualicum Beach Cemetery.)

On September 30, 1944; Blanche married Daniel Beynon Lewis in Vancouver. Blanche died in Victoria, British Columbia, on August 31, 1945.

Daniel died in New Westminster, British Columbia on October 19, 1990.
