Herbert Horatio Trail was a mechanic at the Begg Motor Company. He lived at 746 Gilford Street from 1917 to 1919.

 

Early Life

Herbert Horatio Trail was born on January 12, 1888 in Solihull, Birmingham, Warwickshire, England. According to some sources, his father was George James Trail.

In 1901 Herbert was living with his father in Lowestoft, Suffolk, England.

On August 23, 1908, Herbert married Lilian Elizabeth Wills, who was born in Poole, Dorsetshire, in 1878. (Lilian’s name often appears with three “l”s: “Lillian.”)

In 1921 Herbert Trail and Herbert W. Gardner had a short-lived business called “Shaughnessy Motors,” which was at 475 West 14th Avenue.

From 1922 to 1926, Herbert Trail was a foreman with Brown Auto Repair and Storage Limited, at 634 Howe Street.

The 1927 directory described him as an “inventor.”

By 1928 he was again an auto mechanic, but he continued to work on inventions for many years. He obtained several Canadian and United States patents for mechanical devices used in automobiles and other types of machines, including the following examples.

In 1928 he received a United States patent for an automobile brake mechanism.

In 1936 he received a Canadian patent for a precious metal concentrating apparatus.

Separation

In November 1934, Lillian obtained a judicial separation from Herbert.

In 1937, Lillian was still on West First Avenue, but Herbert had moved to 1686 Barclay Street. It appears that Herbert and Lillian obtained a divorce, but details of the divorce are not available.

Herbert’s Move to Michigan and Second Marriage

In 1941, Herbert moved to Kalamazoo, Michigan to work for the Fuller Manufacturing Company. Although his immigration document stated that he was married to Lillian, he apparently did not know her address.

By 1943, Herbert had married Jean Layfield (née Allice). She was a milliner who was born in Victoria, British Columbia on December 27, 1897. Her parents were Thomas Henry Allice (1867–1921) and Jane Isabella Johns (1870–1953). (Jean had been married to James Henry Layfield in 1917; their marriage ended in divorce on September 14, 1937. ) Jean moved to the United States in November 1941, intending to live in Long Beach, California.

Herbert and Jean lived in Kalamazoo until the late 1940s. By 1951 they were in Long Beach, California.

Jean died in Los Angeles County, California on March 25, 1966.

Herbert died in Los Angeles County on May 1, 1979.

 

Lillian’s Life after Separation from Herbert

The 1949 Vancouver directory listed Lillian as a housekeeper for Gunder Rossland, who lived at 747 East Fourth Street in North Vancouver. Gunder was born in Norway on August 18, 1883. He worked as a riveter.

By 1950, Lillian and Gunder were married.

In 1954, Lillian and Gunder travelled to England. On August 7, 1954 they sailed on the Ile De France from Southampton to New York City.
