Billings, William Hobart (1877-1933)

William (“Bill”) Hobart Billings was an insurance agent who worked with H. Bell-Irving & Company Ltd. He lived at 1851 Comox Street from 1902 to 1904, at 1860 Nelson Street from 1905 to 1906, and at 1017 Denman Street from 1907 to 1916.

He was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on August 15, 1877. His father was John Billings; his mother was Annie Hobart.

William went to Upper Canada College and later to McGill University. He arrived in British Columbia in 1895.

On October 29, 1901, in Hamilton, Wentworth County, Ontario, he married Maud Eleanor (or Elenore) Burrows. She was born in the United States in February in 1879 or 1884. Her father was William Boswell Burrows; her mother was Louise Powell.

William and Maud travelled away from Canada from time to time, including trips to Washington State, California, and Hawaii.

William was an active member of the Royal Vancouver Yacht Club. On February 5, 1903, he attended the first meeting to organize the yacht club. He owned a Columbia River sloop with a 27-foot waterline, called “Mischief.” He was a member of a syndicate that bought the Onoma in 1913.

William and Maud moved to 1017 Denman Street at the end of November 1906.

In 1917, he moved to 3498 Marine Drive in Vancouver. By 1923, he was living at 3519 West Thirty-Eighth Avenue.

William’s second marriage was to Cecilia Howard Johnston. She was born in Scotland on June 17, 1888. Her father was William Johnston. She was an admitting nurse in the Vancouver General Hospital.

William died in Vancouver on June 20, 1933. He was buried in Bellingham, Washington.

Cecilia died in Nanaimo, British Columbia, on December 25, 1983.

William had three children.

 

Elizabeth Hobart Billings

Elizabeth Hobart Billings was born in Vancouver on November 6, 1905. She became a nurse. She never married. She died in Vancouver on February 5, 1982.

 

Unknown Billings (daughter)

William Billings had a daughter. No further information is available at this time.

 

Unknown Billings (son)

William Billings had a son who was born in Vancouver on April 17, 1922. He was living in Vancouver in 1933.
