Lace, Ida (1871-1925)

Ida Lace operated a rooming house and worked as a seamstress. She lived at 1849 Robson Street in 1912.

Ida Lace was born at St. John’s on the Isle of Man on April 13, 1871. Her father was Enos Lace (1837-1906), who was a farmer and seed merchant. Her mother was Jane Killey (1837-1876).

Ida lived with her family on the Isle of Man until at least 1901. In 1900, she obtained a certificate from the St. John Ambulance Association.

In 1901, Ida was living with her father in Onchan, on the Isle of Man. Her occupation was “sick nurse.”

About 1906, Ida travelled to North America. In 1908, she was in Atchison, Kansas, attending the wedding of Ruth Chesterman Cain and Roy Gregory Linley.

According to the local news reports, Ida intended to spend more time in North America:

“Miss Ida Lace of Douglas Isle of Man. the guest of Mrs. Fred Moore. This is the first visit Miss Lace has made to America and she is very favorably impressed with our country and the people, so much so that she contemplates spending a number of years in the states.” Wichita Daily Eagle; Wichita, Kansas, July 17, 1908, page 3.

Ida did go back to the Isle of Man for some time. In the 1911 census, she was living in Conchan parish in the island’s main town of Douglas.

In October 1911, she travelled to Canada.

By 1912, she was in Vancouver, living at 1849 Robson Street, and operating a rooming house.

“Misses Anna and Alice Lace, of the Isle of Man, will arrive to-morrow to visit at the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. M. Walker and Mrs. A. D. Cain. They have been visiting their sister, Miss Ida Lace, who made many friends during an extended visit she made in Atchison and vicinity a year or two ago. She is conducting a rooming house in Vancouver, B.C. In 1913, Ida travelled back to Europe, probably to the Isle of Man. She returned to Canada in September 1913.

In 1914, she was at 1188 Burrard Street. Her occupation was “seamstress.”

On February 22, 1914, Ida travelled on the Great Northern Railroad and entered the United States through Blaine, Washington.

It appears that she did not marry.

She died on April 27, 1925. She was buried in Douglas Borough Cemetery at Douglas, Isle of Man.
