Henry Thomas Lewis was a clerk with the Canadian Pacific Railway. He lived at 1905 Beach Avenue from 1903 to 1905.

 

Family Background

Henry Thomas Lewis was born in in Brentwood, England on May 15, 1840.

His parents were Charles Carne Lewis (1807–1882) and Mary Ann Truston Foakes (1804-1871). Charles was a long-time court solicitor and coroner for Essex.

Henry’s mother died on July 10, 1871.

Charles Carne Lewis died on July 26, 1882. His son (also called Charles Carne Lewis) succeeded him as coroner.

Henry: Travel to Canada

Henry travelled to Canada and settled in Manitoba. On September 1, 1875, he became the postmaster at West Lynne and Emerson, Manitoba.

On January 26, 1882, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he married Mary Wilson Sellar. She was born in Huntingdon, Quebec on October 22, 1860. Her parents were John Sellar and Mary Wilson.

In 1883, Henry was elected to the Emerson school board. (Charles Stanford Douglas, who later lived at 2033 Comox Street in Vancouver, was also a member of the Emerson school board in 1883.)

Henry’s term as postmaster ended in 1884.

By 1890, Henry appeared in the Vancouver directories. (The directory listed him as “Thos. Lewis.” He was a freight agent for the Pacific Coast Steamship Company.)

In the early 1900s he was a clerk for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

 

To United States

On November 30, 1904, Henry and Mary moved to Seattle, Washington. In 1910, Henry was a salesman in a retail furniture store. He was retired by 1920.

Henry died in Seattle on April 28, 1920.

In 1935, Mary applied to become a naturalized United States citizen. In 1940 she was living in Seattle. She died in Seattle on July 17, 1940.

Henry and Mary had the following children.

 

Hazel Lillian Lewis

Hazel Lillian Lewis was born in Emerson, Manitoba on April 8, 1883.

In 1891 and 1901 she lived with her parents in Vancouver.

In 1904, she went to Seattle with her parents. She later applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1930, she was living with her mother.

In 1940, she was living with her sister, Gladys, who was married to Phillip Carl Nyren.

In 1958 she was living in Seattle when she was the informant for the delayed birth registration of her sister, Marjorie.

It appears that she did not marry.

Nor further information is available for her.

 

Bessie Grace Lewis

Bessie Grace Lewis was born in Huntington, Quebec, on December 25, 1886.

In 1891 and 1901 she lived with her parents in Vancouver. In 1904 she moved to Seattle, Washington, with her parents.

On January 17, 1912, in Seattle, she married Arthur Lee Ferver. He was born in Lawrence County, Pennsylvania on March 11, 1880.

By 1920, Arthur and Bessie were living in Long Beach, California.

Bessie died in Los Angeles, California, on April 5, 1940.

Arthur died in San Diego, California on July 8, 1950.

 

Mary Gladys Lewis

Mary Gladys Lewis was born in Vancouver on June 13, 1892.

In 1901 she lived with her parents in Vancouver. In 1904, she went to Seattle with her parents, and in 1910 and 1920 she was with her parents in Seattle.

She applied to become a naturalized United States citizen.

On February 14, 1926, in Seattle, she married Phillip Carl Nyren.

Phillip died Gladys died in King County, Washington, on January 27, 1969. He was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Seattle.

Gladys died in King County, Washington, on June 21, 1972. She was buried in Lake View Cemetery in Seattle.

 

Vivian Edith Lewis

Vivian Edith Lewis was born in Vancouver on January 5, 1898.

In 1904 she went with her parents to live in Seattle, Washington.

On March 5, 1938, in Mount Vernon, Washington, she married Clarence Freeman Lane. He was born in Burke, Idaho, on December 30, 1890.

By 1940, Vivian was divorced and living with her sister, Gladys, who was married to Phillip Nyren.

On May 31, 1963, in King County, Washington, she married Mitchell Marion Ballard. He was born in New York City on September 22, 1894.

Mitchell died in King County on February 27, 1967.

Vivian died in King County on October 20, 1991.

 

Marjorie Ada Lewis

Marjorie Ada Lewis was born in Vancouver on April 24, 1900.

In 1904, she moved with her parents to Seattle, Washington.

On May 10, 1922, in King County, Washington, Marjorie married Thomas Henry Loan. He was born in Post Falls, Idaho.

Thomas died in King County on March 23, 1973.

Marjorie died in King County on December 2, 1975.
