Atkinson, Edward Octavius (1868-1955)

Edward Octavius Atkinson was a postal clerk. He lived at 2052 Beach Avenue from 1902 to 1907.

He was born in Leeds, England, on July 5, 1868. His father was Edward Atkinson (1830-1905), who was the chief surgeon of the Leeds Infirmary from about 1880 to 1904. He was president of the Leeds Philosophical and Literary Society, 1885-86. Edward Octavius Atkinson’s mother was Fanny Dore (1829-1912).

In the 1880s, Edward attended Leeds Grammar School.

He joined the British Columbia postal service in 1888, and worked with the Esquimalt and Nanaimo Railway on Vancouver Island. From 1890 to 1897, he was a mail clerk, travelling between Vancouver and Calgary.

Edward first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1895, living in the Fairview neighbourhood. In 1898, he lived briefly in the West End of Vancouver, at 1619 Alberni Street. By 1902, he was at 2052 Beach Avenue, near the corner of Park Road (which ran north east from Beach Avenue, along the boundary between the City of Vancouver and Stanley Park).

By 1910, he and his family moved to Penticton, where he became the postmaster. Along with Edward’s work for the post office, he planted an orchard on his property and operated a private fruit packing house. He was chairman of the school board in 1912 and 1913.

Edward was married twice. His first wife was Annie Sophia Jacques. She was born in Santhorp, Lincolnshire, England, on August 3, 1871. Her father was Edward Jacques; her mother was Mary Bainton. Annie died in Penticton on April 27, 1953.

Edward’s second wife was Mary Potts. She was born in England on November 17, 1879. She died in Penticton on November 22, 1955.

Edward died in Penticton on December 25, 1955.

Edward and Annie had the following children.

During the First World War, he enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force, and was wounded at Vimy Ridge with the 54th Battalion. He was a fruit grower in the Penticton area. In 1954, he founded and curated the Penticton Museum.

He died in Penticton on November 10, 1973.

Arnold Percival Atkinson

Arnold Percival Atkinson was born in Vancouver on October 21, 1899. He was a fruit grower in the Penticton area.

On June 11, 1924, in Penticton, he married Gladys Elenora Parberry. She was born about 1903 in Bellingham, Washington. Her father was John L. Parberry; her mother was Elizabeth Ferguson. This marriage ended in divorce on June 25, 1934.

Arnold later married Muriel Dennis.

Arnold died in Penticton on August 30, 1982.

Frances Edward Atkinson

On December 4, 1929, in Enderby, British Columbia, he married Inez (Ina) Christine Newstrom. She was born in Revelstoke, British Columbia, about 1908. Her father was Nels Rudolf Newstrom (1885-1966); her mother was Elna Eugenia Fredrickson (1884-1976).

Francis died in Summerland, British Columbia on May 2, 1992.

It appears that Inez died in 1995.
