James Robertson Hendry was the proprietor of the Royal Dairy Ice Cream Parlor at 1216 Denman Street in 1920.

He later became a commercial traveller for R. N. Johnston and Company, a wholesale tobacco company.

He lived at 1216 Denman Street in 1919 and at 2043 Pendrell Street from 1920 to 1934. His wife, Maud, was at 2043 Pendrell Street from 1935 to 1941.

 

Family Background

James Robertson Hendry was born in Tillicoultry, Clackmannanshire, Scotland on November 13, 1875. His parents were James Robertson Hendry (born about 1850) and Euphemia Wilson (born about 1850). James Robertson Hendry, senior, was an inspector of the Poor Register.

 

Marriage in Ontario

James arrived in Canada about 1903.

He became a member of the Muskoka Lodge No. 360 in Bracebridge, Ontario.

On April 2, 1907, in Bracebridge, he married Maud Emma White. She was born in Bracebridge on October 20, 1877. Her parents were William John White (1835-1917) and Ann (“Annie”) Elizabeth Ogilvie (1838-1903).

 

Business in Bassano, Alberta

In August 1911, James and his business partner, James Johnston, purchased property for their new store in Bassano, Alberta. Bassano is about 140 kilometres east of Calgary.

Although Bassano was still a small town then, it was developing rapidly.

The Canadian Pacific Railway was building the nearby Horse Shoe Bend Dam (later called the Bassano Dam) to make a reservoir for domestic and irrigation uses.

James first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1918. He was living at 2610 Mackenzie Street and working as a commercial traveller.

Maud died in Vancouver on March 1, 1949. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.

James and Maud had a daughter.

 

Annie Ogilvie Hendry

Annie Ogilvie Hendry was born in Alberta on July 16, 1909.

In the late 1930s she was working as a hosiery repairer.

On June 19, 1940, in Vancouver, she married Joseph Robert Lightfoot, who owned an apartment house at 1295 West Keith Road in North Vancouver. He was born in Collingwood, Ontario, on September 6, 1877. His parents were Joseph Lightheart and Alice Maria Akitt.

Joseph died in Vancouver on April 9, 1971. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Annie died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on October 30, 1976. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Annie and Joseph had a daughter, Patricia.
