Chandler Starr Edwards was a banker and real estate developer. He lived at 2040 Nelson Street in 1911 and at 1050 Chilco Street in 1913 and 1914.

He was born in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, on March 13, 1863.

His father was John Harrington Edwards, a well-known author and clergyman, who was born in Acton, Massachusetts on September 21, 1834. On October 1, 1862, John Harrington Edwards married Caroline Starr, the daughter of Chandler Starr (1791-1876), an orator and politician. John and Caroline had two sons. The first son was Chandler Starr Edwards. The second son was John Harrington Edwards Junior, who became the manager of the Seattle Trust and Title Company. Caroline died in 1898. On July 25, 1901, John married Anna Van Veghten Starr, who was Caroline’s cousin. John Harrington Edwards Senior died in 1919.

After a period of time in school, Chandler gave up his studies “on account of failing health.” In 1881, when he was 17, he went to Traill county in North Dakota, where he worked as a bookkeeper on the Mayville farm until 1886.

In 1886, he bought a partnership in the Goose River Bank in Mayville, North Dakota. By 1890, he was also the Mayville agent for the Niagara Fire Insurance Company of New York. He became president of the bank in 1893. Along with Charles J. Grandin, Chandler also had a general real estate and insurance business in Mayville. By 1898, Chandler and Mr. Grandin had built the Goose River Bank Building in Mayville.

Chandler was also president of the Canada – North Dakota Land Company, which marketed prairie lands in western Canada. In 1907 he formed the British Columbia Transportation and Commercial Company in Vancouver. In 1909, he went to England, perhaps as part of his property business. In 1911 he sold his Mayville home and moved to Vancouver.

In 1912 and 1913, Chandler was associated with the North Coast Land Company, which promoted real property investments in British Columbia, including the area around what is now Prince George. He went to England in 1912, and by 1913, he was accompanying a group of British visitors, who proceeded to buy large portions of property in central British Columbia.

By 1920, Chandler had moved to Los Angeles, California, where he continued to live for the rest of his life. He died in Los Angeles on October 3, 1945.

Chandler was married three times. His first marriage was on September 30, 1889, to Margaret Von Nieda. This marriage seems to have ended in divorce. There were two children from this marriage: Starr Von Nieda Edwards, a girl who died in early infancy in July 1891; and John (“Jack”) Chandler Edwards (1895-1964).

Chandler’s second marriage, which occurred on April 26, 1899, in Chicopee, Massachusetts, was to Alice Rhome Crandall, who was then living in Fargo, North Dakota. Alice was born in Palmyra, New York, on November 13, 1862. Her father was William Baker Crandall; her mother was Mary Jane Vosburgh. Like Chandler, Alice had been married before. Her first marriage, on February 28, 1882, was to Moses Stern (born 1862); Alice’s first marriage seems to have ended in divorce.

Chandler and Alice had one child: Chandler Starr Edwards, Junior (1910-1966). Alice died in Los Angeles, in July 1929.

Chandler’s third marriage was on June 21, 1934, to Bess L. Moody. She was born in California on January 28, 1879. Her father was William Moody; her mother was Cecelia Sevort. Chandler and Bess had no children together. Bess died in Los Angeles on October 27, 1961.

John (“Jack”) Chandler Edwards was born in Mayville, North Dakota, on March 14, 1893. In 1900, he was living in Minneapolis, Minnesota, with his divorced mother, Margaret.

On June 30, 1915, in Victoria, British Columbia, Jack married Lael Elizabeth Watts. She was born in North Dakota about 1894; her father was J.H. Watts, and her mother was Elizabeth Lemon. Jack described himself as living in Seattle, Washington at the time. This marriage appears to have ended in divorce.

On February 3, 1931, in Orange County, California, Jack married Helen Opal Knowles (née Gord), who had been divorced from her previous husband. She was born in Missouri about 1897. Her father was William Gore; her mother was Montez Hughes. This marriage also appears to have ended in divorce.

On October 14, 1933, in San Joaquin County, California, Jack married Adlarose Leroux, who was a widow. She was born in Oregon on June 9, 1908. Her father was Wallace Childers (her step-father was  Charles D. Martin; her mother was Hazel Corbett.

Chandler S. Edwards, Compendium of History and Biography of North Dakota, Publ. 1900, http://genealogytrails.com/newham/sullivan/bios.html:

Chandler S. Edwards, the present president of the above named institution, was born in West Lebanon, New Hampshire, November 13, 1863, and was the elder of two sons born to Rev. Dr. J. H. and Caroline (Starr) Edwards.  His father now resides in the city of New York.
Mr. Edwards while engaged in academic work was forced to give up his studies on account of failing health and at the age of seventeen years, in 1881, went to Traill county, North Dakota, where he accepted a position as bookkeeper on the Mayville farm and held the place until 1886.  He then purchased a partnership in the bank with which he is now associated and became cashier and in 1893 became president.  In company with Mr. Grandin, under the firm name of Grandin & Edwards, he also operates a general real estate and insurance business.

Mr. Edwards was married, in 1899, to Alice Crandall.  Mr. Edwards is a young man of exceptional business tact and executive ability and he enjoys the confidence of the business men among whom he resides.  He is energetic, intelligent and progressive and is one of the rising young men of North Dakota.  Politically, he is a Republican and is a man of broad ideas and one who keeps pace with public events.  He is also interested in large tracts of the best farming land in the Red river valley of North Dakota, which he rents and sells on the crop payment plan to farmers in small tracts, which is of great benefit to the state by settling up lands with actual bona fide settlers.  In fact, he has made a specialty of splitting up large tracts of land into small farms and selling to actual settlers.  He is also president of the Portland State Bank, of Portland, North Dakota, and president of the Cummings State Bank, of Cummings, North Dakota, and a director in the Clifford State Bank, of Clifford, North Dakota.

“TRIBUTE TO MR. TEX BJORKLUND

HON. BILL SALI of Idaho in the House of Representatives

Thursday, May 24, 2007

Mr. SALI. Madam Speaker, I rise today to ask my colleagues to join me in recognizing the accomplishments of Mr. Tex Bjorklund.  During the 1950’s, Tex Bjorklund was a police officer with the Los Angeles Police Department. While on patrol, he received a call to respond to a shooting at a nearby location. Upon arriving at the scene Mr. Bjorklund discovered the body of a 7-year-old girl who accidentally had shot and killed herself with a handgun found in the glove compartment of a car.

Deeply moved, Tex began working on a way to help prevent this kind of tragedy from recurring. As a result, he invented a device that would not only allow Americans to retain their right to keep and bear arms but also keep children from hurting themselves by using firearms. In fact, Tex was one of the first people to devise what we call today a “trigger lock”.

Unlike advocates of sweeping gun restrictions, Mr. Bjorklund realized gun-related problems were not the weapons themselves but rather those who misuse them. In the wrong hands a weapon can be misused by those too young to understand the deadly force guns possess or by those who mean to do us harm.

Tex saw the need for a device that would ensure firearms are operated only for their intended use. Subsequently, Mr. Bjorklund began a quest to invent such a product. Today there are hundreds of different models of locks for many models of firearms.

We will never truly know how many lives Mr. Bjorklund saved, but it is fitting we honor him today for his invention”.

“John Harrington Edwards was a prominent citizen of Kalispell in the 1890s and again in the 1920s. Born in New Hampshire in 1866, he came to Kalispell in 1891 and served as one of Kalispell’s first aldermen, a member of the first volunteer fire department, assistant secretary of the Kalispell Townsite Company and as a member of the first city council. He married Mary Dixen in Ottumwa, Iowa, in 1893. Two years later she was reportedly the first white woman to visit Avalanche Lake in what later became Glacier National Park. Mrs. Edwards was prominent in church work and Kalispell society, and Mrs. Edwards, according to the ‘Kalispell Bee’ in 1895, was ‘the most prominent public benefactor Kalispell has had.’ In July of 1899 Edwards announced that he would build a divided brick building . . . and by December tenants were moving into the two store-fronts, even though the previous month the plate glass for the Edwards Block had been smashed at the Kalispell freight depot.”
