Henry’s father, George Frederick Berkeley St. John, was a colourful and sometimes controversial man, who was born in 1797. (He often omitted the “George” from his name, so some references call him “Frederick Berkeley St. John.”)

He served for many years in the British army. His military experience included the Peninsular War and the Battle of Waterloo.

In 1830, he became a major in the 52nd Regiment of Foot.

In 1836, he married Henrietta Louisa Maria Jephson, who was the daughter of Rev. John Jephson (1764-1826).

In 1839, he retired from the military and took his family to Australia.

In the late 1840s, John Pascoe Fawkner accused George of taking bribes. George sued Fawkner for libel. The jury failed to agree on a verdict, and each party had to pay their own costs.

It appears that George was not able to find further work. In 1849, the St. John family left Australia.

In 1851, the St. Johns were in England. George’s source of income at that time is not clear; the 1851 census merely described him as “formerly Major in the 52 Regt.”

In 1861, the family was in Lympstone, Devonshire.

In 1864, George became bankrupt.

Around the end of 1865 he became a Military Knight of Windsor. The Knights were a select group of retired army officers, many of whom were impoverished. He received a pension and accommodation at Windsor Castle.

He died on July 23 (or 24), 1866.

Henry’s Life in England and North America

Shortly after Henry was born in 1847, the St. John family moved to England.

In 1851 they were in Iver, Buckinghamshire.

In 1861, Henry and his brother, Aubrey, were students at Grosvenor College in Walcot, a suburb of Bath, Somerset.

In 1871, Henry was living in Fulham, London, with his mother, and his sister, Arabella. He was working as a bank clerk. He later became a civil engineer.

In 1881, in Eton, Buckinghamshire, Henry married Annie Henderson. She was born in Bombay, India on April 26, 1851.

It appears that Henry and Annie were in Galveston, Texas in the early 1880s, since two of their children were born in Galveston.

At the time of the 1891 England and Wales census, Henry was in Yorkshire, England, working as a civil engineer. Annie was in London, along with the rest of the family.

It appears that Henry, Annie and their children travelled to Canada about 1892.

Henry was a civil engineer for the Canadian Pacific Railway; he was based mostly in eastern Canada.

After Henry retired, he and Annie moved to Vancouver. Henry first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1916. He was living at 1502 Georgia Street.

Henderson’s Greater Vancouver City Directory, 1916, page 882.

So he jumped up, pocketed the Riot Act (without which he never travelled), and, mounting his horse, galloped after the procession, which he soon overtook. The Major, who was as brave as a lion, and, unless when much irritated, gifted with a large quantum of good humour, rode in amongst the crowd, and by a clever admixture of bullying and palaver, obtained a respectful hearing. When he had finished, a man armed with a big cudgel, exclaimed in a stentorian voice, that “it was better to fight and die than live and starve,” and springing forward was aiming a tremendous blow at the magistrate, when the latter, wheeling his horse round, took the fellow near the butt end of the ear with the hammer of his riding whip and “floored’” him. The pluck and promptitude of the act, and a few conciliatory words, well seasoned with promises, caused the assemblage to quietly disperse, and though St. John, on returning to his office, issued warrants for the apprehension of half-a-dozen of the ringleaders identifiable by the police, nothing further was heard of arrests or riots.”
