Hay, Frank Russell (1884-1933)

Henderson’s City of Vancouver and North Vancouver Directory, 1909, page 727.

Henderson’s City of Vancouver and North Vancouver Directory, 1909, page 727.

Frank L. Hay was a superintendent for the Vancouver tram car service. He lived at 1800 Nelson Street in 1909.

It is possible that this person was actually Frank Russell Hay, a blacksmith who worked for the British Columbia Electric Railway Company.

Frank Russell Hay was born on November 6, 1884, in Scotland. His father was George Hay. Frank’s mother was Sarah Ogg.

Frank arrived in Canada about 1904, and he first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was living at 507 Westminster Avenue (which became known as Main Street after 1910).

Henderson’s City of Vancouver Directory, 1908, page 627.

Frank lived at the following addresses in Vancouver (and in Britannia Beach from 1923 to 1932).

1908 507 Westminster Avenue
1909 1800 Nelson Street
1910 542 Burnaby Street
1911 501 East Hastings Street
1912 1033 Keefer Street
1913 2521 Clark Drive
1914 to 1916 3347 East 29th Avenue (2247 East 29th Avenue under names in 1914 and 1915)
1917 to 1918 Not listed under Vancouver names
1919 to 1922 5301 Dundee Street (south of Kingsway) (6301 Dundee under names in 1920)
1923 to 1930 Britannia Beach
1931 Not listed under Britannia Beach or under Vancouver names
1932 Britannia Beach
1933 Number 115, 1531 Davie Street

On June 29, 1912, in Vancouver, Frank married Jeannie Yeats. She was born in Newmachar, Aberdeenshire, Scotland, on April 18, 1887. Her father was George Yeats. Her mother was Jane (or Jean) Matthew. Jeannie had arrived in Vancouver only recently; in June 1912 she had sailed from Scotland to Canada on the S.S. Grampian.

Frank was a blacksmith in British Columbia for most of his working career.

In 1921, he was in Stave Falls, British Columbia. Jeannie was living at 5301 Dundee Street in Vancouver, along with her son, Frank, who was born about 1913.

From 1923 to 1932, Frank was at the Britannia Mine in Britannia Beach, British Columbia.

In 1933, the Hay family was living at number 115 in The Angus apartments at 1531 Davie Street. (In January 1980, a fire destroyed this building, which was west of the former Benjamin Tingley Rogers house.)

Frank died in Vancouver on February 24, 1933.

On December 28, 1935, in North Vancouver, Jeannie married James Deas, a miner who was living in Britannia Beach. James was born in Buckhaven, Fifeshire, Scotland on December 24, 1889. His parents were James Deas and Margaret Walker.

James died in North Vancouver, British Columbia, on December 21, 1976.

Jeannie (then called “Jane Deas”) died in Burnaby, British Columbia, on March 31, 1980.

Frank Hay and Jeannie Yeats appear to have had the following children.

Frank G. Hay

Frank G. Hay was born about 1913, probably in Vancouver.

He was living with his mother in Vancouver in 1921 and in the 1930s.

He was a student at the University of British Columbia in the mid-1930s.

In 1980 he was living in Mississauga, Ontario.

Frances Helen Hay

(The connection with this person is only tentative.)

In 1935, she was a witness at the marriage of Jeannie Hay to James Deas. Frances’s address was 2830 Heather Street in Vancouver.

From 1937 to 1939, she was living at number 4, 1019 Bute Street.

In 1940 she was a demonstrator for the British Columbia Electric Railway Company. She was living at 1935 Whyte Avenue in Vancouver.
