Penwill, Charles Tooley (1845-1916)

Charles Tooley Penwill was a carpenter, hardware merchant, and builder, who lived at 2061 Beach Avenue in 1904.

He was born on August 31, 1845 in Wolston (or Totnes), Devon, England [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totnes] . His father was Charles Penwill; his mother was Mary Tooley.

In early 1869, Charles married Mary Jane Sellick in Newton Abbott, Devon, England. She was born in Bovey Tracy, Devon [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bovey_Tracey], on January 13, 1844.

By 1871, Charles and Mary Jane were living at 619 Fulton Street in Chicago, Illinois, around the time of the Chicago’s great fire. Their first child, Elizabeth May Penwill, was born in Chicago on July 15, 1872. Their second child, Walter Frank Penwill, was born in Chicago on September 27, 1876.

In 1878, the family moved to Victoria, British Columbia, going through San Francisco, and travelling to Victoria on the steamer Dakota. They arrived in Esquimalt, near Victoria, in February 1878. He started a building contracting business and built many houses and other buildings. Penwill Street in Victoria (now generally called Penwell Street) was named after him.

By 1880, the family was living at the corner of Blanchard Street and Chatham Street in Victoria, British Columbia. Charles was a carpenter.

In 1885, Charles and Mary had a third child, who was stillborn.

In 1888, Charles was a councillor for the City of Victoria.

Eventually, he gave up the contracting business and operated a hardware business on Johnson Street in Victoria. By 1898, Charles was the secretary-treasurer and manager of Walter Stanhope Fraser’s hardware company in Victoria.

In 1904 and 1905, Charles was in Vancouver. In 1904, he was living at 2061 Beach Avenue, where he was described as a merchant. From 1905 to 1906, he was at 1385 West Seventh Ave.; he was the president and managing director of the B.C. Box and Lumber Company at 1812 Granville Street.

He was a member of the A.O.U.W. [Ancient Order of United Workmen: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Order_of_United_Workmen], which was a fraternal, charitable and benevolent society.

By 1908, Charles was back in Victoria as a builder and contractor. He was still living in Victoria when he died on May 28, 1916. He was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

Mary Jane lived in Victoria until she died on April 19, 1926. She was buried in Ross Bay Cemetery in Victoria.

Charles and Mary Jane had two surviving children.

Elizabeth May Penwill

Elizabeth May Penwill was born on July 15, 1872, in Chicago, Illinois. She was a teacher. She did not marry. She died in Victoria on December 12, 1936. She was buried in Royal Oak Burial Park.

Walter Frank Penwill

Walter Frank Penwill was born in Chicago, Illinois on September 27, 1876.

For a time he was in the grocery business with George William Weeks (1862-1948) at 548 Hastings Street (near Seymour Street) in Vancouver. Later he became a real estate and financial broker.

On December 17, 1901, in Vancouver, he married Alice Cecilia Harvie. She was born in Toronto, Ontario, on September 1, 1883. Her father was Thomas Harvie (1863-1927); her mother was Alice Cecilia Jamison (1863-1931).

Walter died in Vancouver on July 2, 1926. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Alice died in Vancouver on June 18, 1951. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby.

Walter and Alice had a son named Frank Harvie Penwill. He was born in Vancouver on March 21, 1903. He became a well-known dentist. On September 11, 1937, in Vancouver, he married Betty Norah Green. She was born in the Rural Municipality of Wallace, Manitoba on April 4, 1913. She was the daughter of Frances H. Caulfield Green and Audrey Catherine Lockhard.

Frank Harvie Penwill died in Vancouver on November 6, 1960.

Frank and Betty had two daughters: Sally Elizabeth Penwill and Patricia (Patty) Penwill. Sally married James Roland Duncan in Vancouver on September 16, 1961.

After Frank’s death, Betty married Ernest Charles Hammond (1903-1976).
