Family Background

Sidney John Peerless was born on December 9, 1882, in West Tarring, Cuckfield, Sussex, England. Sidney’s father was Thomas Henry Peerless (1848-1917), who was a coach builder, wheelwright and undertaker. Sidney’s mother was Caroline Boon (1851-1920).

About the time of Sidney’s birth, his father had become insolvent and was going through a legal process to pay off his creditors.

Daisy Alicia Peerless, death notice, Published in Vancouver Sun and/or The Province from Aug. 22 to Sept. 6, 2015; http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/vancouversun/obituary.aspx?n=daisy-peerless&pid=175555312: Daisy Peerless(1914 – 2015); Peerless, Daisy Alicia, September 5, 1914 – July 19, 2015; The daughter of Thomas and Alice Shellshear, Daisy was born in Vancouver in the house her Father built in Point Grey, when there were still dairy farms in the area. She attended Lord Kitchener, Lord Byng and King Edward schools. Daisy learned business skills that were useful when she became Post Mistress at Pioneer Mine where her family moved to run the general store and post office during the difficult years of the Great Depression. It was there that she met and married Jack Peerless in 1935 and with whom she had four children, Skip and Penny before and Diane and Donna after Jack returned from the Second Great War. Their life together was an adventure spanning 3 decades raising their family in the house of her birth with some hardship, occasional disappointment but ultimately much success and always with much love. After a lengthy illness, brought on by his WWII service, Jack died young in 1965 leaving Daisy alone but with an opportunity to create a new life for herself. In 1976, she had the good fortune to meet Fernando Diesta on the high seas and returning to Richmond, they spent 28 wonderful years together. Fred and Daisy travelled the world, took an active part in their children and grandchildren’s lives, nurtured marvellous flowers and vegetables in their garden, helped their families with their gardens, volunteered at the Children’s Hospital and uniquely, performed and managed a band of senior musicians who, with their time and talents, entertained other seniors all over the lower mainland. Fred died in 2004 and again Daisy was alone. Throughout most of her long life, Daisy was a sensible, down to earth, rational and capable person. She will be remembered for her intelligence, her remarkable memory, her generosity, sweet manner and kind heart. So it was difficult for her and for those who loved her when, in her last years, this bright mind and lively personality gradually disappeared. Daisy died peacefully in her sleep in the early hours of July 19, 2015 at Braddan Hospital. Her four children will miss her greatly, her ten grandsons adored her and her twelve great- grandchildren knew her as the heart and soul of her family. We all are better for being part of this remarkable life well lived. We wish to thank all the caregivers who lovingly looked after her over this past decade. A Memorial Service will be held at the Unitarian Church at 49th and Oak at 3:00 p.m., September 13, 2015. The family will be glad to share the afternoon with friends to honour the life of our dear Daisy. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the BC Children’s Hospital.”

We will all miss our darling Fred, who left us on November 1, 2004, at the age of 93 after a short stay in Richmond Hospital’s cardiology ward. Fred will be sorely missed by his stepchildren Skip (Ann), Penny (Bob), Diane (David) and Donna and his nine stepgrandsons and all of their families. Fred came to Canada from Hong Kong in 1976 to start a new life with Daisy. He soon became a dedicated volunteer at BC Children’s Hospital and the much loved leader of the LISS Band, a group of musical seniors who shared their talents with the sick and elderly for over ten years. He was an active member of the Minoru Seniors Centre for more than 25 years. Fred’s zest for life and musical gifts brought happiness into many lives. His beautiful smile, affectionate nature and steady, caring ways will be an inspiration to all who knew him. The family will welcome friends to a celebration of his life and reception to be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, November 20th in the lounge of their condominium, Regent’s Gate, 8975 Jones Road, Richmond, BC.
