Lane, Samuel George (1874-1955)

Samuel George Lane was an employee of the City of Vancouver. He lived at 1964 Georgia Street from 1917 to 1919.

Samuel George Lane was born in Romsey, Hampshire, England, on February 10, 1874. His father was Samuel Lane (1843-1911). His mother was Frances Sivyer (1834-1878).

Samuel Lane (Senior)

Samuel Lane (Senior) was an agricultural labourer and farm bailiff who was married three times. His first marriage was in 1866 to Frances Sivyer (sometimes spelled Sciver or Saiver). In 1878, while Frances was pregnant with her fourth child, she apparently drowned herself in the River Test, near Romsey.

Samuel’s second marriage was in 1878, to Elizabeth Dyke. Elizabeth died on the Isle of Wight in 1891. Shortly afterward, Samuel and his family moved to Barrie Island, which is on Lake Huron in Ontario. Samuel planted an orchard on his property.

On June 18, 1906, Samuel Lane married Jane Dubois, who was a widow. It appears that she was born Jane Elizabeth Johnson, probably in Kensington, London, England, on September 2, 1854. Her father was Job Johnson. Her mother was Emily Haines.

Samuel’s and Jane’s marriage was apparently not a smooth one, but it did not last long. Samuel died on April 20, 1911, on Barrie Island. He was buried in Gordon Township Cemetery.

Jane did not give up on marriage. On October 11, 1911, in Barrie Island, she married William Robison (or Robertson) Srigley, who died before 1921. On September 8, 1921, in Toronto, Ontario, she married John F. Van Horn, who died before 1930.

Jane died on May 9, 1930, at Gore Bay, Ontario. She was buried in Gordon Township Cemetery.

Samuel George Lane

Samuel George Lane may have been living in the Revelstoke area of British Columbia in 1901, working in a saw mill.

By 1915, he was in Vancouver, living in Stanley Park and working for the City of Vancouver. On June 16, 1915, in Vancouver, he married Kate Elizabeth Mckenzie, who was a widow. She was born on April 24, 1880, in Chelsea, London, England. Her father was James Southey. Her mother was Mary Ann Upchurch.

Kate first marriage was in Toronto, Ontario, on January 1, 1910, to Robert Mckenzie, who was a stone cutter. He was born about 1880 in Scotland. His father was George Mckenzie. His mother was Christina Jenkins. Robert died from tuberculosis in Toronto on February 26, 1911. By June 1, 1911, the date of the 1911 Canada census, Kate was living in Vancouver, along with her sister, Maud Southey.

After Samuel’s and Kate’s marriage, they lived at 1964 Georgia Street until 1919. Later they moved to 550 East 60th Avenue. Samuel worked as a city parks truck driver.

About 1930, Samuel and Kate moved to 748 East 58th Avenue. Samuel retired about 1930.

Kate died in Vancouver on January 1, 1932. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Samuel died in Vancouver on August 10, 1955. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Samuel and Kate had a daughter.

Frances Betty Lane

Frances Betty Lane was born in Vancouver about 1918.

On October 10, 1935, in Vancouver, Betty married Horace Earl Smith (H. Earl Smith), who worked as a laborer. He was born in Vancouver about 1915. His father was John Henry Smith (1886-1960). His mother was Grace Stevenson (1889-1981).

Earl and Betty had a son, Earl Smith, who was working as a used truck attendant in 1955.
