Shelly Brothers was a bakery firm. Its main business was at 2533 Ash Street, but in 1914 and 1915 there was a branch at 740 Denman Street, which Shelly Brothers had taken over from Hoy and Sons. (Further information on the Hoy family appears on the page for Charles Hoy.)

The Shelly brothers were William Curtis Shelly (1878-1951) and Frederick Shelly (1886-1948).

William Curtis Shelly was born in Jordan, Ontario on September 17, 1878. His parents were James William Tallman Shelly and Ellen High.

According to his Who’s Who in Canada biography, William attended the public schools in St. Catharines, Ontario and Potter College in Kentucky. (It appears that Potter College in Bowling Green, Kentucky was actually a school for women. The nearby school for men was Ogden College.)

From 1898 to about 1910, William was a partner in Shelly Brothers in St. Catharines.

On June 8, 1903, in Jordan, Ontario, he married Cora Marie Snure. She was born in Jordan on January 14, 1881. Her parents were James Burton Snure (1835-1981) and Adelaide Petty.

According to Fred Shelly, a family descendant, William’s brother, Frederick, moved to Vancouver to start a bakery. About this time, William was in the United States. (Fred Shelly said that William was in Texas. Another possibility is Missouri, since William’s daughter, Margaret, was born in Odessa, Missouri in 1908.) Frederick contacted William to come to Vancouver to help manage the bakery’s volume of work.

Frederick and William started a new partnership called Shelly Brothers.

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1912. He was living at 1448 West 11th Avenue and working as a baker with Shelly Brothers.

From 1912 to 1950, he lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1912 to 1913 1448 West 11th Avenue
1914 to 1925 1104 West 15th Avenue
1926 to 1944 1563 Matthews Avenue
1945 to 1950 2533 Wallace Crescent

About 1913, William bought Frederick’s half of the bakery business. Frederick moved to Parksville, British Columbia and began farming.

In 1916, William incorporated the business as a provincial corporation called Shelly Brothers, Limited.

The business was successful, and the company expanded to other areas in British Columbia.

In 1925, Shelly Brothers, Limited went into voluntary liquidation, although it continued to operate, and its existing management continued to run the company. The purpose of the liquidation was to re-construct the company or to sell the company’s assets to a new entity.

4X Bread – Selling Bread To Housewives During the 1920’s; comment by Fred Shelly, August 2018; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WX34ZE6Oglk:

“Fredrick Shelly was my Great Grandfather and William was my great uncle. The Vancouver archives don’t have this entirely correct. It was Fredrick who first started the 4X Bakery and later called his brother William (who was living in Texas at the time) to come assist him because it was growing too large, at which time he gave him half of the business. Fredrick eventually sold his half to William and moved to Parksville, BC in 1913 where he started farming. This property is still owned and farmed by my family (Shelly Family) today. From there, the adventures of Fredrick continue as one of the early settlers of Parkville and who gave much to the [community].

The name 4X was because Fredrick arrived in Vancouver with four (4) ten dollar bills in his pocket to start the bakery.

If anyone would like more history on the family, please feel free to contact me.
