Marriage and Life in Western Canada

On May 12, 1897, in Banff, Alberta, William married Elizabeth Jane McIntosh. She was born in New Brunswick on April 9, 1867. Her parents were John McIntosh (1841-1883) and Mary Horton.

William and Elizabeth lived in Calgary for a short time.

By 1899, William was the C.P.R.’s superintendent of bridges and building in Cranbrook, British Columbia.

In 1904, William became a director of the Crow’s Nest Lumber Company Limited.

In 1904, William resigned from the C.P.R.’s bridge and building department.

In the spring of 1905, William travelled to New Brunswick. He returned home in April.

 

Move to Vancouver

In May 1905, the Stocks family moved to Vancouver.

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1906. He was a commercial traveller, living at 1950 Nelson Street.

In the fall of 1907, Elizabeth’s mother, Mary, died in Vancouver.

In 1912, William became the superintendent of Municipal Construction Company.

By 1914 the Municipal Construction Company had changed its name to Vancouver Wood Pipe and Tank Company, Limited.

William was with the Vancouver Wood Pipe and Tank Company until about 1918.

By 1919, the Vancouver directory described him as a general contractor.

In September 1919, William travelled through Seattle, on his way to Auburn, Washington.

In the 1920 United States census, William, Elizabeth and their children were living in Seattle. William was working as a cement manufacturer.

By 1921, the Stocks family was back in Vancouver. William was a general contractor.

William continued to work as a general contractor through the 1920s and 1930s. He retired about 1939.

William died in Vancouver on November 29, 1941. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Elizabeth died in Vancouver on March 12, 1960. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

William and Elizabeth had the following children.

 

Florence Hortense Irene Stocks

Florence Hortense Irene Stocks was born in Cranbrook, British Columbia, on June 4, 1903.

On November 3, 1955, in Los Angeles, California, she married Hugh Morice Harries. He was born on February 18, 1892 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He had become a naturalized United States citizen in 1927.

Hugh died in San Diego, California on October 26, 1973.

Florence died in Oregon on November 9, 1987.

 

Oliva Winona Stocks

Oliva Winona Stocks was born in Vancouver on February 16, 1906.

On August 1, 1926, in Vancouver, she married Edward Chamberlain Bressler. He was born in Vancouver on August 14, 1902. His parents were George B. Bressler and Alberta Chamberlain.

In 1940 and 1941 and Edward were living in Ketchikan, Alaska.

Edward died in Los Angeles, California on October 27, 1953. He was buried in Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes, California.

Oliva died in Los Angeles on March 3, 1972. She was buried in Green Hills Memorial Park in Rancho Palos Verdes.

 

Sterling Edgar McIntosh Stocks

Sterling Edgar McIntosh Stocks was born in Vancouver on March 14, 1911.

He worked as a drug company manager.

He married Margaret Mary Turner.

He died in Delta, British Columbia, on October 10, 1987.
