Katherine (“Kate”) Clement Smith was born in Seattle, Washington, on May 1, 1874. Her parents were George Henry Smith (1841-1921) and Catherine Clement Crocker Stevens (1843-1916).

George Henry Smith was sometimes called “Captain Harry Smith”. He died in Victoria on February 7, 1921.

In 1881 and 1891, Katherine was living with her parents in New Westminster, British Columbia.

Katherine first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1902. She was a stenographer for Donald Greenfield Macdonell (1849-1916), a Vancouver lawyer who lived at 1906 Nelson Street from 1907 to 1916.

On August 17, 1916, in London, England, Katherine married George Gray Donald, an engineer who had formerly lived in Victoria.

George had been married before, to Adelaide Mary Redford (1865–1944). The wedding was on January 7, 1890, in Lynemouth, Northumberland, England. George and Adelaide were separated about 1911. (In 1927, Adelaide was still referring to herself as “separated.”)

When George enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force on May 25, 1915, he stated that his next of kin was “Miss K.C. Smith, 5010 Orpheum Building” in Vancouver.

In 1925, Katherine (probably with George) was living in what was then the Emirate of Transjordan (formerly called Trans-Jordania).

George died in Jerusalem on December 21, 1927.
