Thomas Donald Macdonald was an employee of the B.C. Permanent Loan and Savings Company. He lived at 610 Jervis Street from 1921 to 1929.
Family Background
Thomas Donald Macdonald was born in Glasgow, Scotland on August 4, 1876.
His parents were Alfred Macdonald (1854-1910) and Mary Clark (1854-1895).
Alfred Macdonald was a railway station master who was born about 1854 in Abernethy, Morayshire, Scotland.
Mary Macdonald died in Glasgow on March 27, 1895.

Alfred Macdonald died in Glasgow on September 23, 1910.

Early Life
Thomas lived with his family until he was about 25.
In 1891 he was a railway booking clerk.
According to the 1901 Scottish census he was a missionary.
To Canada
In 1903 Thomas sailed from Glasgow to Canada on the Allan Line’s S.S. Pomeranian.

The Pomeranian arrived in Montreal on September 23, 1903.
Thomas’s destination was Winnipeg, Manitoba, and he was planning to work as a missionary.

To Vancouver
Thomas Macdonald first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. He was working as a clerk for the British Columbia Permanent Loan and Savings Company. He was rooming at 975 Granville Street.
Sibbie Cordelia Brinley (née Cooper) (1858-1954) operated the rooming house at 975 Granville Street.
In October 1907 Thomas was the secretary of the St. Andrews Young Men’s Literary and Social Society.
His contact address was 956 Granville Street, which was the home of Mrs. Sarah Branscombe and her daughter, Varney.
Thomas was a member of St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church. He sometimes sang at local church events.
Marriage to Varney Branscombe
On September 7, 1909 in Vancouver, Thomas married Varney Eliza Branscombe.

Varney Branscombe was born in St. Vincent (or Meaford), Ontario on September 18, 1886. Her parents were David Almond Branscombe (1858-1927) and Sarah Clark (1861-1946). The Branscombe family lived in British Columbia and Oregon in the 1890s. They were in British Columbia in the early 1900s.
David and Sarah Branscombe’s marriage ended sometime before 1913. On July 24, 1913 David Branscombe went through a marriage ceremony with Ida Grace Kellogg in Grand Rapids, Michigan. (David and Sarah Brinscombe were not divorced until August 23, 1913.) David Branscombe died on October 25, 1927 at the Iowa State Hospital in Clarinda, Nodaway Township, Iowa.

Sarah Branscombe did not re-marry. She died in Vancouver on June 20, 1946.
Thomas and Varney: Married Life
After Thomas’s and Varney’s wedding they lived at 740 East Seventh Avenue in Vancouver.
Attinlea: New House in Shaughnessy Heights
In 1912 Thomas obtained a permit to build a new house at the northwest corner of 19th Avenue and Cypress Street in Shaughnessy Heights. The builder (and possibly the designer) was William Tinney. The address of the house was 1903 19th Avenue.

By February 1913 the Macdonalds had moved into the new house, which they called “Attinlea.”

In July 1919 the wedding of Thomas’s sister, Mary, took place at the Macdonald residence.
The house was later a private residence. Henry Herbert Stevens, M. P., and his family lived in the house for periods of time between 1928 and 1946. From the late 1940s the house was a private residence, although it sometimes offered rental accommodation as well.
The house was for sale in 1970.
The house was still on the property in 2022.

Travel to South Seas and New Zealand
In December 1919 the Macdonalds left Vancouver for a vacation in the South Seas and New Zealand.
They sailed on S.S. Makura, which left Vancouver on December 19, 1919.

The Makura arrived at Auckland, New Zealand on January 11, 1920.

The Macdonalds were not on the list of passengers that arrived in Auckland on January 11. They may have stopped in Fiji or at some other point before the ship arrived in Auckland.

The Macdonalds returned from their trip in May 1920. They travelled on R.M.S. Niagara, which left Auckland, New Zealand on May 6, 1920.

They arrived in Vancouver on May 22, 1920.

The immigration document gave Thomas’s address as 1274 Burrard Street, which was the home of his mother-in-law, Sarah Branscombe.
From 1921 to 1929 the Macdonalds lived in the Felix Apartments at 610 Jervis Street.

In January 1923 the Macdonalds went to Hawaii for a three-month vacation.

They returned to Vancouver in April 1923 on S. S. Makura.

Boy Scouts Association
Thomas was a supporter of the Boy Scouts Association.

“The Rickshaw”
In the mid-1920s Varney was operating an oriental goods store called “The Rickshaw.”
In 1926 the store was at 810 Howe Street.
In 1927 the store moved to 721 Robson Street, just west of the Star Loan Company.

In November 1927 Varney retired from business. The Rickshaw sold its stock at clearance prices.
Sale of British Columbia Permanent Loan Company to Canada Permanent Mortgage Corporation
In 1927 the British Columbia Permanent Loan Company agreed to sell its assets to Canada Permanent Mortgage Corporation.
Thomas became the loan manager in the merged company.
It appears that Thomas’s position with the Canada Permanent Mortgage Corporation ended in late 1928 or early 1929.
To California
In March 1929, the Macdonalds were preparing to travel to California. The Vancouver Boy Scouts Association presented Thomas with a “scout thanks badge.”

On July 14, 1929, Donald and Varney, along with their son, Alfred Donald Macdonald, travelled from Vancouver to Los Angeles. According to their immigration document they were planning to live permanently in Los Angeles. They entered the United States at Blaine, Washington.

In November 1929, Varney Macdonald was advertising Christmas gifts at “The Rickshaw,” which was at 1485 North Vine Street in Los Angeles, near the southwest corner of Vine Street and Sunset Boulevard. She had evidently revived the name of the store from her former shop in Vancouver.
At the time of the 1930 United States census the Macdonalds were living at 1414 Morningside Crescent in Los Angeles. The census information stated that Thomas and Varney were operating an art store. This was probably the gift store at 1485 Vine Street, which appeared under Thomas’s listing in the 1931 Los Angeles directory.
Breakdown of Marriage.
In June 1933 Varney sued Thomas for divorce. Around this time they began living at separate addresses.
The 1935 Los Angeles directory listed Varney as “Mrs. T. D. Macdonald,” who was operating an antique store at 6707 Hollywood Boulevard. There was no listing for Thomas D. Macdonald.
Later Life
Thomas and Varney continued to live separately.
On March 12, 1937, Thomas declared his intention to become a naturalized United States citizen. He was living at 5897 Hermon Avenue in Los Angeles. He indicated that he was working as a writer and that he had a crippled right hand. The declaration of intention said that he was married.

On March 27, 1940, Thomas petitioned to become a naturalized United States citizen. His address was still 5897 Hermon Avenue, and he described his occupation as “unemployed.” He stated that he was divorced from Varney Macdonald.

Thomas became a naturalized United States citizen on June 28, 1940.

Thomas died in Los Angeles on October 26 (or 27), 1950.
Varney Macdonald: Later Life
After Thomas and Varney separated in the early 1930s, Varney continued to live in Los Angeles. She operated an antiques store until the 1950s.
On July 20, 1937 she declared her intention to become a naturalized United States citizen. The declaration document indicated that she was still married to Thomas Macdonald.

On May 6, 1940 she petitioned to become a naturalized United States citizen. The petition document indicated that she was divorced from Thomas Macdonald.

She became a naturalized United States citizen on August 9, 1940.

Varney lived in Los Angeles until the 1960s.

She died in Los Angeles on December 19, 1965.
Son: Alfred Donald Macdonald
Thomas and Varney Macdonald had a son named Alfred Donald Macdonald. (He was often called “Donald.”)
Alfred Donald Macdonald was born in Vancouver on June 28, 1914.
In 1920 he travelled with his parents to the South Seas and New Zealand. In 1923 he went to Hawaii with his parents.
In 1929 he and his parents moved to California.
He attended Hollywood High School in Los Angeles.
In the late 1930s and 1940s he worked as a clothing store manager, including a period with Mayson Stores, which was a women’s lingerie business.
On June 19, 1937 he declared his intention to become a naturalized United States citizen.

On July 6, 1938 in Los Angeles he married Patricia Lea Dale. She was born in San Diego, California. Her parents were Henry Vincent Dale and Winifred Anna Spaulding. Her birthdate was probably August 14, 1919.

Donald and Patricia travelled to Vancouver for their honeymoon.
In 1939 Donald obtained a divorce from Patricia, claiming that her cooking gave him indigestion and that her pets damaged the house that he and Patricia were renting.
Patricia married Felix Peter Marcianite in Los Angeles on March 16, 1944. He was born in New Orleans, Louisiana on December 3, 1918 (or 1917).

When Felix Peter Marciante registered with the United States military draft system on October 2, 1944 he was living in New Orleans. (His registration document did not mention Patricia.)

It appears that Felix’s and Patricia’s marriage ended in divorce. According to an entry in ancestry.ca, Patricia later lived in New York State and in Tucson, Arizona. She died on February 23, 1997.
On March 28, 1940, Donald Macdonald petitioned to become a naturalized United States citizen.

On June 28, 1940 he became a naturalized United States citizen.

On October 16, 1940 he registered with the United States military draft system.

In 1948, Alfred was living with Elsie M. Macdonald.

Elsie was born Elsie Millicent Miller in Chicago, Illinois on March 25, 1909. Her parents were Charles Anthony Miller (1877-1943) and Myrtle Frances Colstrom (1888–1958).
Charles Anthony Miller died in Los Angeles, California on December 29, 1943.
Myrtle Frances Miller died in Los Angeles on May 21, 1958.
Elsie’s Social Security application refers to her name as “Elsie Miller Macdonald” in July 1942, so her marriage to Alfred Donald Macdonald may have taken place by then.
By the time of the 1950 United States census, Donald and Elzie had a son, Donald James MacDonald.

Alfred Donald MacDonald died in Los Angeles on September 14, 1964.
He was buried in Valhalla Memorial Park in North Hollywood, California.

There is also a memorial to him in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.

Elsie died on November 13, 2005. She was buried in in Elm Grove Cemetery in Washington, Iowa.
