Phillips, Frank Grimmer (1862-1931)

Frank Grimmer Phillips was a machinist, a mechanic, engineer, and an inventor. He lived at 2032 Beach Avenue in 1903.

Frank Grimmer Phillips was born in St. John, New Brunswick on August 11, 1862. His father was Thomas Joseph Phillips; his mother was Priscilla Ann Hazen.

On November 23, 1897, in Keewatin, Rainy River, Ontario, Frank married Jessie Eleanor Clark. She was born on January 23, 1873, in Ontario (probably Meaford).

Frank and Jessie arrived in Vancouver about 1903. Frank was a machinist with Pacific Coast Lumber Company. In 1904 and 1905, Frank stayed with the same employer, but the family had moved to 1378 Burrard Street.

From 1906 to 1908, Frank did not appear in the Vancouver directories. It appears that the family may have moved to Port Moody, British Columbia, because their youngest son, Fred, was born in Port Moody in 1907.

By 1909, the family was back in Vancouver, living at 1614 Keefer Street. Frank was a master mechanic with Anglo-American Lumber Company. Later, the family moved to 620 Woodland Drive.

In 1920, Frank received a patent for a method for salvaging submerged vessels.

    • Hello Sal,

Thank you for letting me know this information about the Phillips family. I am updating the information on Hazen and his wife, Jessie.

      Robert

  3. I’ve been researching early Vancouver breweries and run across some info on the ones in the West End (Red Cross and Stanley Park). If you’re interested I can put it in some kind of order.
