George Henry Dorrell was born in Boston, Lincolnshire, England, on July 19, 1864. His father was George Edward Dorrell (1835-1924), who was a surveyor and land appraiser. His mother was Edith Shaw (1843-1899).

George went to private schools. In 1871 and 1881 he was living with his parents in London, England. In 1881 he was a “builder’s pupil.”

On March 26, 1887, in Lytham, Lancashire, George married Martina Marie Frances Leleux de Guiche, who was a French teacher. She was born in Belgium on June 17, 1857. Her father was Leander Leleux de Guiche, a captain with the Belgian artillery. Martina’s mother was Louise Beeckman.

George studied law at the Middle Temple in London with Heber Leonidas Hart, K.C. (1865-1948), and was called to the bar of the Middle Temple on April 29, 1896.

George had an extensive military career. He served with the 5th Battalion of the Queen’s Royal West Surrey Regiment; he became a captain in 1893, a major in 1903, and a lieutenant-colonel in 1911.

He was a vice chairman of the executive of the Land Union (England) in 1910. This was an organization that objected to increased land taxes.

George was a military member of the Surrey Territorial Association from 1910 to 1912. The association gathered a list of men with military experience who could offer their services to defend their country if necessary.

The Dorrells moved to Canada in 1911. They lived at the following addresses in the Vancouver area.

1912 number 308, 1086 Bute Street (listed as 1806 Bute Street under names)
1913 and 1914 2006 Beach Avenue
1915 not listed under Vancouver names
1916 to 1929 621 West 15th Street, North Vancouver
1930 to 1941 5525 Alma Road (or Street), Vancouver
1942 to 1946 4506 Douglas Road, Burnaby

Although George became a member of the British Columbia Law Society in 1913, there is little evidence that he practiced as a lawyer in British Columbia. He worked largely in the areas of finance and insurance and real estate during his time in Vancouver. He was president of the Vancouver Real Estate Board in 1927 and 1938.

In 1914, he addressed a gathering of trust company managers on the effect of the British Columbia Trust Companies Act.

She died in Burnaby on September 10, 1988.

Harold George Hugh Dorrell

Harold George Hugh Dorrell was born in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, in 1891.

He studied at Charterhouse School in England, and later went to Emmanuel College in Cambridge.

At the beginning of the First World War, he enlisted with the Durham Light Infantry. He was killed in action on April 2, 1916. He was buried in Agny Cemetery in Pas de Calais, France.
