Clark, William Ernest (1882-1918)

William Ernest Clark was a real estate broker. He appeared at 2060 Beach Avenue in the 1916 to 1918 Vancouver directories. His wife, Ethel May Clark, lived at 2060 Beach Avenue in 1920.

William was born in Dundee, Scotland, on September 12, 1882. His father was William Clark. His mother was Margaret Elder.

William arrived in Canada about 1906. By 1909, he was working as a clerk with the real estate and insurance firm of Mackinnon and Campbell, at 748 Westminster Avenue (later called Main Street). Hector MacKinnon (1876-1930) and Murdoch Campbell (born in Scotland about 1879) were the members of the firm. William was a witness at Murdock Campbell’s wedding on June 2, 1909.

On April 20, 1910, in Vancouver, William married Ethel May Hill. She was born on October 26, 1882, in Norwood, Ontario. Her father was Thomas Nesbitt Hill. Her mother was Annie Hutchinson.

In 1911, William was living at number 3, 154 East Seventh Avenue. He was working with Mutual Investment Company; Murdoch Campbell and John M. Munro were the other members of the firm.

From 1912 to 1913, he continued to work with Mutual Investment Company. He was living at 1549 East 13th Avenue.

In 1914, William was again working with Hector Mackinnon’s real estate and insurance business. From 1914 to 1915, he was still at 1549 East 13th Avenue.

On July 9, 1915, William enlisted with the Canadian Expeditionary Force. The 1916 Vancouver directory showed him at 2060 Beach Avenue.

In March 1916, William embarked for military service in France.

He was killed in action on March 31, 1918. He was buried in Bellacourt Military Cemetery in France.

Ethel stayed at 2060 Beach Avenue until about 1920. She never re-married. She continued to live in Vancouver until she died on August 15, 1964.

William and Ethel had the following children.

Kenneth William Clark

Kenneth William Clark was born in Vancouver in January 1911. He worked for the City of Vancouver for some time. In 1955, it appears that he was married to Lucy and was living at 1959 East 61st Avenue. He was working as a sanitary inspector for the Metro Health Unit.

He was living in Vancouver in 1964.

Margaret Jean Clark

Margaret Jean Clark (often called “Jean”) was born in Vancouver on August 20, 1912. She graduated from St. Paul’s Hospital School of Nursing in 1935. In 1940, she was working as a nurse in Vancouver; she was living with Ethel at 2455 Hemlock Street.

Jean married Sander (Sandy) Lochhead Taylor, who was with the Royal Canadian Air Force. He was born on October 7, 1911, in Basswood, Manitoba. His parents were Robert Taylor and Ellen Lochhead. Sandy died in Vancouver on October 22, 1980.

Jean died on May 6, 2005.

Ruth May Clark

Ruth May Clark was born in British Columbia about 1914. She became a nurse.

In 1940, she was working at Vancouver General Hospital; she was living with her mother at 2455 Hemlock Street.

Ruth later married C. Hinchcliffe. [This was probably Clifford Ernest Hinchcliffe, who was born in Quebec on December 25, 1912. His father was Arnold Hinchcliffe. Clifford worked as a pipefitter. When Clifford died on April 7, 1958, his marital status was “separated.” He was buried in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Burnaby, British Columbia.]
