Archibald Walker was an automobile dealer who lived at 1816 Alberni Street in 1914. The Archibald Walter Automobile Company was at 1840 Georgia Street in 1913 and at 1800 Georgia Street in 1914.

 

Early Life

Archibald (“Archie”) Walker was born in New Glasgow, Nova Scotia, on March 20, 1886. His parents were Robert A. Walker (1847–1898) and Christina (“Christy”) McKenzie Fraser (1860–1945).

 

Arrival in Vancouver

Archibald Walker first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was a machinist with Burrard Boat and Engine Company and he was living at 1069 Thurlow Street.

Alvon Lambeth Stirton (1887-1961) operated a similar touring vehicle called the “Cheerie Auto Park Tally-Ho.”

The tour business operators sometimes drew fines for speeding and for driving outside the permitted hours.

Along with the tour business, Archibald also operated the A. Walker Automobile Company.

The automobile dealership was in a building on Pender Street. In 1912, one of the walls had to be re-built, because it was encroaching on the neighbour’s lot.

Later in 1912, the automobile dealership moved to 1840 Georgia Street.

It appears that the business did not last long. In 1916, Archibald was a machinist with Canadian Western Garage at 1460 Howe Street. He was living at the St. Regis Hotel at 602 Dunsmuir Street.

He later had an “auto livery” business.

 

Marriage to Florence Malcolm

On May 29, 1918, in Vancouver, Archibald married Florence Furneaux Malcolm.

Florence was born in Tatamagouche, Nova Scotia on February 3, 1890. Her parents were David Malcolm (1855-1907) and Jeannie Milne (1857-1930).

David Malcolm died in Vancouver on December 13, 1907.

Only a Short Marriage

Archibald and Florence were married only a short time.

In January 1919, Archibald contracted influenza. He developed pneumonia and he died in Vancouver on January 15, 1919.

Florence’s Later Life

Archibald did not leave a will. Florence became the administrator of his estate.

In 1921, Florence was living with her mother at 1160 Harwood Street. Florence was the owner of a motor cartage company.

By 1947, she was a sales clerk at Spencer’s department store in Vancouver.

In 1948, she was married to William George Cole, who was a furniture salesman.

Florence died in North Vancouver, British Columbia on January 6, 1959. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

William Cole died in Kelowna, British Columbia on November 14, 1974.
