William Geikie Morrison was a dealer in building supplies. He lived at 1942 Alberni Street in 1909.

 

Early Life

William Geikie Morrison was born in Dundee, Scotland on July 9, 1875. (His middle name sometimes appears as “Geekie”). His parents were James Troup Morrison and Catherine Geikie.

In 1881 and 1981, William was living with his parents in St. Andrew, Forfarshire, Scotland.

 

To Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1905. He was living at 1028 Nelson Street and he was a commission agent, with an office in the Inns of Court building.

In 1908, William became engaged to Florence Esme Baker. She was the daughter of Frederick Francis Baker (1858-1925), who lived at 1991 Nelson Street from 1913 to 1925. For a time, William was in business with Donald Ralston Morrison, who was the son of Alexander Morrison, a prominent British Columbia building contractor. (Despite their identical surnames, it appears that William and Donald were not close relatives.)

Donald Morrison later became a fruit rancher at Keremeos, British Columbia. He died in Portland, Oregon on February 17, 1953.

By 1912, William was a real estate and financial services broker.

Military Service during First World War

In November 1914, William signed his attestation papers to serve as a captain with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War.

He spent much of his military career as a paymaster and field cashier. According to his military record, he served six months in Canada, 19 months in England and 24 months in France. At the end of the war his rank was “major.”

On April 17, 1919, he was admitted to Shaughnessy Military Hospital in Vancouver for treatment of pulmonary tuberculosis.

He was discharged from the military forces on May 10, 1919, as part of the general demobilization at the end of the war.

In 1919, William became an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE) for his service during the war.

Florence was in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island when Frederick Baker died in 1956.

She died in England on March 26, 1977.
