Joseph Walter McFarland was an accountant, railway contractor, and investor. He lived at 1865 Haro Street from 1900 to 1937.

Joseph Walter McFarland was born in Niagara, Ontario, on May 16, 1853. His father was John McFarland. Joseph’s mother was Amelia Keefer.

After going to school in Welland County, Ontario, Joseph went to Massachusetts, where he worked on the construction of the Hoosac Tunnel in western Massachusetts.

On September 20, 1876, in Thorold, Ontario, he married Agnes Wand. She was born in Thorold about 1855. Her parents were William and Mary Wand. Agnes died in Thorold on March 8, 1877.

From 1878 to 1880, Joseph worked for the Great Western Railway in Hamilton, Ontario and in London, Ontario.

For a short time in 1880 and 1881, he was with the Northern Transit Company of Port Huron, Michigan.

From 1881 to 1884, he worked with the Great Western Railway Company in Detroit, Michigan.

In 1884 he went to British Columbia, where he worked on railway construction.

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1887. He was a contractor, living on Alexander Street.

In 1886 he was associated with George Alexander Keefer in the Vancouver Water Works Company. He stayed with the company until the City of Vancouver acquired it in 1892.

He was also involved with the Vancouver Electric Illuminating Company.

On November 15, 1888, in Detroit, Michigan, Joseph married Margaret Thompson Day. She was born on October 21, 1860. Her parents were David and Jane Day.

In 1892, Joseph began a real estate, insurance and finance business, which later became Mahon, McFarland and Mahon Limited.

The McFarlands moved to a new house on Haro Street about 1900. At first, the address was “Haro, near Denman.”

Joseph retired from business in 1911.

Joseph and Margaret were well-known members of the Vancouver community. They appeared in the Vancouver society directory in 1908.

They also appeared at events honoring early Vancouver residents.

Joseph was a member of the Vancouver Lawn Tennis Club, the Shaughnessy Heights Golf Club, the Jericho Country Cub, and a charter member of the Vancouver Club;

Joseph died in Vancouver on July 26, 1937. He was buried in Ogdensburg Cemetery in Ogdensburg, New York.

Margaret died in Vancouver on July 26, 1958.
