Geoffrey’s Life in England

In 1881 and 1891, Geoffrey was living with his parents in Surrey.

In 1899, in Croydon, Surrey, Geoffrey married Mary Ethel Jean Boon (also known as Ethel Jeanie Boon). She was born in Exeter, Devon, England on April 21, 1874. It appears that her parents were William Henry Boon and Emily Elizabeth Bedford. William Boon was a solicitor’s clerk for much of his career.

In 1901, Geoffrey and Ethel were in Wandsworth, near London. Their young daughter, Evelyn, was living with them. Geoffrey was a stock exchange clerk.

To Canada

In the early 1900s, Geoffrey went to Canada by himself. Ethel remained in England with Evelyn.

Sometime during his time in Canada, Geoffrey injured his left knee in a mining explosion. (He later said that the explosion was in 1900 or 1902.)

He first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1904. He was living at 833 Georgia Street and working as a clerk with Clarkson, Cross and Helliwell.

He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

1904 833 Georgia Street
1905 2062 Beach Avenue
1906 Not listed under Vancouver names
1907 808 West Hastings Street
1908 No home address under Vancouver names
1909 Number 5, 441 Seymour Street

In 1907, he was a clerk with John Kendall’s accounting firm.

In 1908 and 1909, he was a clerk with Kendall, Sewell and Company.

He did not appear in the Vancouver directories after 1909.

He spent time in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, where he was the secretary of the Prince Rupert Club.

Henderson’s Prince Rupert City Directory, 1910-1911, page 102.

Henderson’s Prince Rupert City Directory, 1910-1911, page 102.

By 1911, he was in Atlin, British Columbia, where he was a miner.

He was again in Prince Rupert in 1913, living at 315 Second Avenue. It is not clear what he was doing for employment.

He may have worked for a railway in northern British Columbia around 1914.

On September 9, 1915, in Prince George, British Columbia, he signed his attestation papers to serve with the Canadian Expeditionary Force during the First World War. He gave his occupation as “railroader.” His next of kin was Ethel Turner, Highview, Mottram, near Manchester. (She later lived at Banstead Grange, Banstead, Surrey.)

He served in England. In 1916, while he was in military training, he fell in a trench and re-injured his left knee. He recovered somewhat, and he continued serving until the end of the war.

He was discharged in Winnipeg, Manitoba, on October 3, 1919, during the general demobilization at the end of the war.

After the War

It appears that Geoffrey returned to British Columbia shortly after his discharge from the military forces.

In August 1920, Ethel sailed to Canada. Her immigration document said that she was going to join her daughter. The document did not mention Geoffrey.

In 1924 he was a bookkeeper for Brown’s Victoria Nurseries.

Evelyn Gertrude Bamford, remembrance, by Anne Moon; Contributed To The Globe And Mail; Published July 23, 2001; Updated April 12, 2018: https://www.theglobeandmail.com/incoming/evelyn-gertrude-bamford/article18416469/.

War bride, mother, friend. Born June 15, 1900, in London. Died April 10 [2001], in Victoria, of old age, aged 100.

Right to the end of her 100 years on earth, Evelyn Bamford had a sharp sense of the ridiculous. Once I told her I was going to a lecture about Nellie McClung, one of Canada’s early feminists. She fought for women’s rights, I explained.

“Have we got any yet?” came the tart reply.

Evelyn Bamford was Vancouver Island’s last war bride from the First World War. She was a pretty 18-year-old when she arrived in Victoria, B.C., in early 1919. In England, she had met and married A/Sgt. Harvey Bamford, middle son of Thomas Bamford, a distinguished Victoria painter and contemporary of Emily Carr, who lived across the road from them.

“I guess it was love,” Evelyn said once. “He was very handsome and I wasn’t too bad, either. But I didn’t know anything about Canada except for the Mounties. They were all heroes to us. I really didn’t know what I was coming to. I was very foolish and very young.”

Evelyn had been the only child of a remittance man. Shortly after she was born her father scarpered off to the gold fields in British Columbia and didn’t return to England until the outbreak of hostilities. It was he who introduced his daughter to his younger comrade, Harvey Bamford.

Evelyn’s mother was a district nurse, the daughter of a clergyman [Note: probably not: he was a solicitor’s clerk for many years; Evelyn’s father, Geoffrey, was the son of a clergyman.], who worked hard to support her daughter. “But I never remember her putting her arms around me,” Evelyn mourned, not long before she died.

Evelyn’s elder son, John, recalls his mother as having the same “stiff, impervious English veneer” and it wasn’t until just before her death that she unbent enough to tell her sons she loved them.

After the Bamfords arrived in Victoria, Harvey used his veteran’s land grant to pre-empt acreage along the Grand Trunk Railway, near Smithers. Their dream of farming soon soured, but not before Evelyn endured a northern winter. Two families strung carpets on ropes to divide the one-room shack into sleeping quarters and she remembered she could lie in bed and see it snow between the cracks in the walls.

After about six months of unsuccessful farming, they came back to Victoria, where Harvey eventually became a court reporter. He died in 1981. During the Depression, they rented an apartment from Emily Carr in what was to become famous as The House of All Sorts in Carr’s book about her experiences as a landlady.

One night, there was something banging so Harvey climbed up into the attic to find the source of the noise, and saw Carr’s paintings on the ceiling. They didn’t think anything of it at the time, but a few years later they discovered how special they were. (The paintings are still there.)

In the last years of her life, Evelyn was frail and nearly blind, but remained a good conversationalist and kept in close touch with her family.

We got to know each other when I arrived five years ago as a volunteer reader. Together, we revisited the books of her youth: The Secret Garden, Alice in Wonderland, The Railway Children. Occasionally we would break off for a stirring rendition of King Henry V’s speech to his troops on the eve of the battle of Agincourt, as retold by William Shakespeare. She still had her school book copy of the play by her bedside, complete with the pencilled notes from class. She loved England and her one regret was that she never got back there.

She died before we could finish Anne of Green Gables. I was grateful she had missed Matthew’s fictional death, as we would have wept together.

Evelyn loved flowers, so her family always made sure there were fragrant flowers in her room. She died early one evening, holding the hand of a dear friend and surrounded by flowers. She leaves her sons John and Gordon, five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Anne Moon was a friend of Evelyn Bamford.
