John Dewar McMurrich was a lawyer. He lived at 913 Denman Street from 1913 to 1915.

John Dewar McMurrich was born in Toronto, Ontario, on April 20, 1874. His father was William Barclay McMurrich (1842-1908), who was a lawyer, mayor of Toronto in 1881-1882, and an unsuccessful candidate for Muskoka, Ontario, in the House of Commons in 1887.

He became a law student in 1895, and he was called to the Ontario bar in 1898.

John married Evelyn Louise Temple in Toronto on October 12, 1898. She was born in Quebec on October 4, 1873. Her parents were Edmond Bonner Temple (1837-1914) and Louisa Douglas (1843-1879) (who was sometimes known as Louisa Smith). Edmond Temple was a civil engineer.

After their marriage, John and Evelyn lived at 63 Brunswick Avenue in Toronto.

War Service and Death

When the First World War began, John tried to enlist with the Canadian military forces as an officer. Because of a weak knee, he was rejected twice.

In February 1917, he joined the 253rd Battalion as a private, not as an officer. He went overseas in March 1917, and by July he was in France with the 72nd Battalion. He saw action at Lens and Passchendaele.

On December 7, 1917, he was near Arras when he received several wounds to his abdomen and leg. He died two days later, on December 9, 1917. He was buried at Duisans British Cemetery at Pas de Calais, France.

Evelyn after the War

Evelyn became the executor of John’s will. The estate’s only asset was life insurance worth $7600, which was a significant amount, but not a great fortune.

Evelyn probably received a small widow’s pension from the Canadian government.

She travelled to Europe and returned to Vancouver briefly in the 1920s. For some time she stayed with her sister, Naomi Georgina Cuthbert Temple (1878-1952) and Naomi’s husband, James Edward McMullen. The McMullens lived at 1599 Angus Avenue in Vancouver. James McMullen was a lawyer for the Canadian Pacific Railway.

Evelyn did not re-marry. It appears that she later moved to England, and that she died in Midhurst, Sussex, in 1960.

John and Evelyn had two daughters.
