William Byron Leavens was an accountant. He lived at 1860 Barclay Street from 1920 to 1922.

 

Early Life in Ontario

William Byron Leavens was born in Pickering, Ontario, on December 30, 1886. His parents were Daniel Leavens (1820–1888) and Jane Hawkins (1847–1917).

In 1891, William was living with his mother in Pickering.

In 1901, he was a student, lodging with Rev. Enos Farnsworth in Fredericksburg, Ontario.

 

Years in Vancouver

William first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1908. He was a bookkeeper with the hardware firm of McLachlan Brothers.

On December 26, 1910, in Vancouver, William married Ella Martha Frances Clement. She was born in Brantford, Ontario on January 10, 1886. Her parents were John Clement (1840–1897) and Mary Armstrong (1845–1931).

William worked at a series of businesses in Vancouver.

1911: accountant with the building construction firm of McDonald and Wilson.

1916: accountant with Pacific Mills Limited.

1920: accountant and timekeeper with the Canadian Robert Dollar Company Limited.

Ella died in Vancouver on February 6, 1921. She was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

On March 22, 1922, in Vancouver, William married Agnes Marshall Hackston. She was born in Blantyre, Scotland, on December 29, 1903. Her parents were Oliver Hackston (1880-1906) and Lily Jack (1880-1969).

In 1923, William was the managing director of Western Shell Fisheries Limited.

In 1924, he was the superintendent of Ballantyne Pier.

 

Back to Eastern North America

In1926, William and his family lived briefly in Toronto. Later they moved to Cleveland, Ohio.

In 1930, the Leavens family was in Lakewood, a suburb of Cleveland.

William became a naturalized United States citizen on January 11, 1940.

In 1942, William registered with the United States draft system. He was working with the Enos Coal Mining Company in Cleveland.

He continued to live in Ohio through the 1940s and 1950s He died in Cleveland on November 12, 1960. He was buried in Ocean View Burial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Agnes died in Kirkland, Washington, on December 5, 1989.

 

William had five sons with Ella Clement.

 

Byron Clement Leavens

Byron Clement Leavens was born in Vancouver on September 28, 1911.

In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

He worked as a watchman and as a service station attendant.

On August 28, 1930, in Erie, Pennsylvania, he married Shirley June Ford, who was a sales clerk. She was born in Boise, Idaho on June 25, 1912. Her parents were Walter Ford and Edythe Ketzell.

On April 12, 1940, Byron became a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1940, Byron and Shirley were living in in Lakewood.

Byron died on February 2, 1997 in Cowlitz County, Washington. He was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet, Washington.

Shirley died on February 28, 2006, in St. George, Utah. She was buried in Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet, Washington.

 

William Manson Leavens

William Manson Leavens was born in Vancouver on June 17, 1913.

In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver.

In 1930 he was with his parents in Lakewood, Ohio.

In the 1930s he worked as a welder.

On November 23, 1935, in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, he married Adelaide Martha Maxwell, who was a bookkeeper. She was born in Rutherford, New Jersey, on January 16, 1912. Her parents were Lester Park Maxwell and Addie Tallman.

On October 2, 1939, William became a naturalized United States citizen.

In 1940, William and Adelaide were living in Lakewood.

William died in Connecticut on July 1, 1971. He was buried in Sunset Hills Burial Park in Canton, Ohio

Adelaide died in Smithfield, Johnston County, North Carolina, on April 23, 2008. She was buried in Sunset Hills Burial Park in Canton, Ohio.

 

Donald Edgar Leavens

Donald Edgar Leavens was born in Vancouver on March 1, 1915.

In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver. In 1930 he was with his parents in Lakewood, Ohio.

He married Valerie Maxwell. She was born in Rutherford, New Jersey on January 20, 1915. (She was the younger sister of Adelaide Maxwell, who married Donald’s brother, William.)

On May 3, 1941, Donald became a naturalized United States citizen.

Norman Kenyon Leavens

Norman Kenyon Leavens was born in Vancouver on February 4, 1918.

In 1926, the Leavens family was living in Toronto.

On June 7, 1926, a car struck and killed Norman as he ran into the street to pick up a pile of newspapers thrown from a truck.

Victor Martin (“Jack”) Leavens

Victor Martin Leavens was born in Vancouver on July 10, 1919. (He was sometimes called “Jack,” and one source also called him “John.”)

In 1921 he was living with his parents in Vancouver. In 1930 and 1940 he was with his parents in Lakewood, Ohio.

On November 4, 1942, in Madison, Alabama, he married Audrey Eschenberg.

Audrey died in Los Angeles County, California on November 18, 1961.

Victor later married Carol Webb.

Victor died in Salt Lake City, Utah, on January 28, 1964. He was buried in Fielding Memorial Park Cemetery in Idaho Falls, Idaho.

 

William had a daughter with Agnes Hackston.

 

Doreen Agnes Leavens

Doreen Agnes Leavens was born in Vancouver on November 16, 1923.

In 1930 and 1940 she was living with her parents in Lakewood, Ohio.

She married Edwin Anthony Vodicka (1917–1978).

She died in Seattle, Washington, on May 4, 2017.

Shirley June Leavens, age 93, was born June 25, 1912, in Boise, Idaho, a daughter of Walter and Edith Ketzel Ford. She passed away Tuesday, February 28, 2006, at Dixie Regional Medical Center in St. George, Utah, due to complications following surgery. She eloped to Pennsylvania to marry Byron Leavens in 1930.

They lived in the Cleveland, OH, area for 28 years where they raised their three children, and she had a catering service. In 1957, Shirley, her husband and her youngest daughter moved to Cathlamet, WA, which became her home for the next 40 years. She cooked at a nursing home, and worked at a local grade school as a teacher’s aide and playground supervisor. In 1998 she relocated to Hurricane, Utah to be close to her family. She was an avid bowler, played in a Women’s Baseball League, served as a Scouting leader, was active in her communities. In her later years, she learned to use the computer to do genealogical research.

Shirley is survived by her: son, Roland (Doris) Leavens, of Selah, WA; daughters, Jeanette (Joseph) Alessi, of Orange, CA, and Beverlee (Ken) Shamo, of Hurricane, UT; 14 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her: husband of 67 years, Byron; parents, Walter and Edith; two grandchildren; and one brother, Darrell.

Graveside services will be at the Greenwood Cemetery in Cathlamet, WA. Funeral arrangements through Dowling Funeral Home, Cathlamet, WA.”
