Burke, James (1869-1954)

James Burke was a seaman and longshoreman who lived at 1800 Alberni Street from 1903 to 1917.

He may also have lived at 1801 Alberni Street in 1901, although the insurance maps from 1897 to 1912 do not seem to include a house at 1801 Alberni Street.

He was born on June 24, 1869, apparently in California, although some sources say that he was born in Ireland. His father was James Burke; his mother was Mary Blake.

On February 21, 1895, in Vancouver, he married Florence Lillian Wood. She was born on October 11, 1877, in Toronto, Ontario. Her parents were George Stevens Wood (1849-1937) and Marina Dingle. (Marina was born about 1850; she died probably between 1881 and 1891.)

A person named J. Burke, who was sailor on the Empress of China, first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1896, and was living at 410 Dunlevy Avenue.

James Burke, longshoreman, was at 537 Hornby Street in the 1900-1901 Directory.

James Burke lived at 1800 Alberni Street from 1903 to 1917. In 1918, he moved to 481 17th West Avenue. From about 1930 to 1946, he was at 361 West 17th Avenue, working as a laborer, much of the time for the City of Vancouver. He retired about 1947.

James died in Vancouver on March 25, 1954. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
