James William Alexander was born in Gloucester, Ontario, on December 23, 1879. His parents were John Alexander (1856-1935) and Elizabeth Little (1853–1924). John Alexander was a farmer, carpenter and contractor.
In 1881, 1891 and 1901, James was living with his parents in Gloucester, Ontario.
To Vancouver
It appears that James arrived in Vancouver about 1904 or 1905.
Marriage to Sarah McDonald
On February 6, 1905, in Vancouver, James married Sarah Ada McDonald. She described herself as a widow, although she was actually recently divorced.
It appears that Sarah was born in London, Ontario about 1860 (although some sources say 1869). Her parents were Orrin Davis (1819-1901) and Mary Jane Wilson (1828-1912).
On September 1, 1880, in Blanshard, Ontario, Sarah married William Ronald McDonald (who was sometimes known as Ronald McDonald or Rennald McDonald).
In 1904, Ronald and Sarah were in Butte, Montana. Sarah filed for divorce, saying that Ronald had failed to provide her with the necessaries of life, that he had been guilty of cruelty, and that he had caused bodily harm to her.
On February 1, 1905, the Butte newspapers reported that the court had granted Sarah’s request for a decree of absolute divorce.
James and Sarah: Married Life
James and Sarah lived briefly at 1893 Beach Avenue in Vancouver.

There is little further information on the marriage. It appears to have ended by 1909.
Sarah married Arthur Hughes Bailey in Victoria, British Columbia on July 28, 1909. (Arthur was a widower who was born in Warwickshire, England about 1860. His first marriage was on October 10, 1879, in Tredington, Warwickshire, to Elizabeth Ann Harris.)
The marriage registration described Sarah as a widow.
Arthur and Sarah lived for a time in Washington State. However, in 1911, Sarah sued Arthur for divorce. She alleged that Arthur had been cruel to her.
When Sarah’s mother died in 1912, Sarah was living at 1801 Virginia Avenue in Everett, Washington.
No further information is available for Sarah.
James: Later Life
James may have been living in Penticton, British Columbia in 1911.
It appears that he was living in the Cariboo district of British Columbia in 1921. He was a carpenter, and he was lodging with Martin and Caroline Renshaw. Caroline was the postmaster at Roe Lake, British Columbia.
James was living in Ottawa, Ontario, when his father died in 1935.
James died in Ottawa on November 15, 1968.
