Walter William Walsh was a lawyer and an owner of real estate in Vancouver. He was the son of William Walsh (probably 1844-1928) and Theresa Mary Northgraves (1848 or 1850-1926).

William Walsh

Walter’s father, William Walsh, was born in Quebec on July 25, 1844, the son of Thomas and Catherine Walsh. On June 24, 1874, in Belleville, Ontario, he married Theresa Mary Northgraves, who was the daughter of William J. Northgraves and Alice Jane Madden.

William Walsh was in the wholesale and retail clothing business in Montreal from 1876 to 1877, and then in Winnipeg, Manitoba from 1882 to 1896. He moved to Vancouver in 1896, where he later organized the Metropolitan Trust Co. Ltd. He retired in 1904.

Theresa Mary Walsh died in Vancouver on February 5, 1926.

On December 8, 1928, William Walsh was at the intersection of Granville Street and Robson Street. He stumbled in front of a car, which struck him and threw him to the ground. John Park Fraser of Port Coquitlam, who worked at Essondale Mental Hospital, was driving the car. Mr. Walsh’s injuries did not appear serious; he had two broken ribs and cuts to his head. However, his injuries turned out to be serious, and Mr. Walsh died on December 10, 1928.

The police charged Mr. Fraser with manslaughter, but a coroner’s inquiry concluded that Mr. Fraser was not to blame. The jury recommended that the city should ban left-hand turns in the downtown area. Mr. Fraser was later the postmaster at Essondale Mental Institution from 1930 to 1962. He died in Victoria on April 15, 1982.

Walter William Walsh

Walter was born in Montreal, Quebec, on June 4, 1875. He went to school at St. Boniface College at St. Boniface, Manitoba. Then he went to Ottawa University, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree, and an honorary degree of Bachelor Licentiate of Philosophy.

After graduating from university, Walter went to Vancouver to study law. He articled with Lewis Griffith McPhillips and Adolphus Williams, and he was called to the British Columbia bar in 1899. He became a junior partner with McPhillips & Williams, which was one of a succession of law firms that led to the current firm of Bull, Housser and Tupper.

On August 30, 1904, in Kingston, Ontario, Walter married Catherine Margaret Rigney. She was the eldest daughter of William Rigney and Catherine Hickey.

Walter and Margaret had one daughter, Mary Catherine Theresa Walsh, who was born in Vancouver on December 22. [Her birth year appears variously as 1902, 1907, and 1908, but 1907 is the most likely year.]

Margaret died in Vancouver on March 12, 1915. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.

In 1917, Walter married Helen Irene Swift in Kingston, Ontario. She was born in Kingston on March 13, 1885. Her father was Joseph Swift; her mother was Mary Bolton.

Walter died in Vancouver on July 26, 1947. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.

Helen died in Vancouver on February 25, 1971. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery.

Mary Catherine Walsh (1908-1976) (“Kitty”)

Kitty was the daughter of Walter William Walsh and Catherine Margaret Rigney.

Mary Catherine Theresa Walsh was born in Vancouver on December 22, probably in 1907. On November 3, 1938, in Vancouver, she married Joseph Mckenna, who was born on March 19, 1892, in Ottawa, Ontario. His father was James Andrew Joseph McKenna (1862-1919); his mother was Mary Ryan.

Joseph was a lawyer. He died in Vancouver on November 16, 1976.

Mary died in West Vancouver, British Columbia, on February 3, 1976.

Norah Mary Walsh (1915-1983)

Norah was the daughter of Walter William Walsh and Catherine Margaret Rigney.

She was born in Vancouver on January 11, 1915. She did not marry. She died in Vancouver on November 5, 1983.

John Walter Walsh (1920-2010)

John Walter Walsh was the son of Walter William Walsh and Helen Irene Swift.

He was born in Vancouver on November 12, 1920. He was a captain in the Canadian Army during the Second World War, and he graduated from the Royal Military College in 1941. He served with the Princess Patricia’s Light Infantry in England. He went to the first class of the University of British Columbia law school, and graduated in 1948. He articled at his father’s and became a real estate lawyer in Vancouver. He died on February 21, 2010.
