James Lionel Eustace Martin was a clerk in a series of hardware businesses. He lived at 1894 Alberni Street from 1909 to 1912.

James Lionel Eustace Martin was born in Gibraltar on March 27, 1872 (or 1873). (He was often called “Lionel.”) His father was William Woodruff Martin. Lionel’s mother was Charlotte Ayles (1845-1934).

In 1901, Lionel was living in Toronto, Ontario. He was a wood worker with the Massey-Harris Company. He lived at 22 Lippincott Street, along with his mother, Charlotte, his brother, Norman Leslie Martin, and his sister, Winnifred Anna Martin.

Lionel married Eleanor Snelling. She was born in Norwood, Surrey, England, on January 17, 1874 (or 1875). Her father was Walter Snelling (1839 -1927). Eleanor’s mother was Edna Worsley (1839-1929) (Walter and Edna were buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.)

Lionel first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907.

He was a clerk with the George Hunter Hardware Company, which was the successor to Fife and Hunter.

Lionel remained with Martin, Finlayson and Mather until about 1924. In 1926 he was working for the hardware company of McLennan, McFeely and Company (which later became McLennan, McFeely and Prior).

Lionel died in Vancouver on June 1, 1931. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Eleanor died in New Westminster, British Columbia, on August 3, 1957. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby.

James and Eleanor had a son.

 

William Martin

William Martin was born in British Columbia about 1915.

He was living with his parents in 1921 and 1931.

He appears to have died between 1930 and 1958.
