Hugh Cadvan Howells was an electrician. He lived at 746 Gilford Street in 1907.

Hugh Cadvan Howells was born in Dolgellau (Dolgelley), Merionethshire, Wales, on January 21, 1883. His parents were Gabriel Howells (1849-1934) and Selina Roberts (1847-1933).

 

To Canada

Hugh and his parents lived in Wales until 1892, when they moved to Canada. By 1901, they were in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Marriage to Mary Tate

On September 21 (or 22), 1906, in Winnipeg, Hugh married Mary (“May”) Knox Tate. She was born in Ireland on August 17, 1882. Her parents were Robert and Mary Tate.

 

To Vancouver

Hugh first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1907. He was living at 746 Gilford Street and working as an electrician.

Hugh later lived Burnaby, British Columbia, for much of the rest of his time in Canada.

He served with the Royal Air Force during the First World War.

In 1921 Hugh was an electrician with the City of Burnaby, British Columbia. He later became an inspector with the British Columbia Electric Railway (B.C.E.R.).

Mary died in Burnaby on September 28, 1939, after an electric inter-urban train struck her. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Hugh died in Vancouver on March 6, 1942. He was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby.

Ethel Gertrude Howells

Ethel Gertrude Howells was born in Nanaimo, British Columbia on March 14, 1909.

In 1911 and 1921 and 1939 she was living with her parents.

In 1942 she was in Regina, Saskatchewan.

By 1948, she was known as “Ethel G. Magee.” She was living in Kelowna, British Columbia, where she was a music teacher.

On April 20, 1966, in San Francisco, Ethel married Paul A. Lee, who was born about 1910. This marriage ended in divorce in October 1969.

Ethel died on January 30, 1981 in Alameda County, California.
