Robert Stuart Somerville was a journalist. He lived at 1808 Nelson Street from 1914 to 1920.

Robert Stuart Somerville was born in Brantford, Ontario, on March 3, 1875. (He was sometimes known as “R.S. Somerville” or “Robin Somerville.”) His parents were James Somerville (1828-1909) and Flora McLaughlin (1838-1927).

 

Early Newspaper Career and Marriage

In 1900, Robert began working with the Brantford Expositor. He later became the telegraph editor on the Montreal Herald and the Montreal Star, followed by a time as assistant managing editor of the Montreal Star.

On June 17, 1903, in Brantford, he married Beatrice Mary Hastings. She was born in New York on July 19, 1878 (or 1879). Her parents were John Hastings (1843-1908) and Lillian Powell (1854-1922).

Beatrice had been a talented pianist since she was quite young, and she maintained her interest and participation in music after her marriage. Along with her sister and brother, she often played chamber music for various social events.

 

Move to Vancouver

In 1912 Robert and Beatrice moved to Vancouver.

Robert first appeared in the Vancouver directories in 1913. He was living at number 11, 915 Robson Street, and working as a reporter for the News-Advertiser newspaper. He lived at the following addresses in Vancouver.

About 1916 he became an editor on the Vancouver World newspaper. He later served as the paper’s managing editor.

Beatrice’s mother lived in Vancouver in the early 1920s. She died in Vancouver on October 31, 1922.

From about 1923 to 1924 Robert was with the Vancouver Province newspaper.

He then became the New York editor of the Montreal Star.

In 1926 he and Beatrice went to Calgary, where Robert spent two years as the editor of the Calgary Albertan. He then became editor of the Calgary Herald until he retired in June 1946

He and Beatrice moved back to Vancouver.

Beatrice died in Vancouver on June 22, 1952. She was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Robert died in Vancouver on April 22, 1955. He was buried in the Masonic Cemetery in Burnaby, British Columbia.

Robert and Beatrice did not have any children.
