Hobson, George (1860-1923)

George Hobson was a contractor, boot and shoe dealer, grocer, and wholesale fruit dealer. He lived at 1928 Nelson Street from 1900 to 1923.

He was born on a farm in Downie Township, in Perth County, Ontario, on December 19, probably in 1860. His father was Robert Hobson (about 1816-1910) who was a farmer. His mother was Elizabeth Daily (1834-1926).

While George was working as a building contractor in Uxbridge, Ontario, he met Agnes Sophia Bell. She was born in Whitwell County, England on February 5, 1870. Her father was Joseph Hall. Her mother was Martha Brown. About 1872, the Hall family moved to Canada. After Martha died in Uxbridge, Ontario, on July 12, 1873, Agnes was adopted by Samuel and Euphemia Bell.

George moved to western Canada in the late 1880s. In 1890, Agnes also moved to western Canada. George and Agnes were married in Banff, Alberta, in 1890. Rev. Charles Gordon (also known as the writer Ralph Connor) performed the wedding ceremony.

By 1892, George was a contractor in Vancouver. He lived at 411 Princess Street until about 1897.

From 1893 to 1896, George was a boot and shoe merchant at 430 Westminster Avenue (later called Main Street).

From 1897, George operated a grocery store. In 1898, the family was living at 330 Barnard Street (later called Union Street).

About 1901, George and the rest of the family moved to 1928 Nelson Street.

George continued in the grocery business for several years. Later he was the president of the Budd Olmstead Company.

About 1920, his health began to decline. He had a period of hospital treatment, and then spent the rest of his life at home. He died in Vancouver on June 11, 1923. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
