Thomas Stewart was a railway construction worker and mining company director. He lived at 2033 Beach Avenue from 1910 to 1924.

Thomas Stewart was born in Prince Edward Island on February 5, 1857. His parents were Peter Stewart and Anna Clow.

Thomas attended public schools in Prince Edward Island.

In 1880 he went to western North America. For one year he worked for the Northern Pacific Railway in the Dakotas. Later he began construction work with the Canadian Pacific Railway, east of Regina.

Later he travelled from Regina to San Francisco and then to British Columbia.

In March 1882 he began working near Yale and Hope, British Columbia. He held a series of positions with the C.P.R., including bridge foreman and bridge and building master for the Pacific division.

On September 21, 1887, in Spences Bridge, British Columbia, he married Mary Clemes. She was born in Lindsay, Ontario on January 10, 1871 (some sources give her birth year as 1869 or 1874).

By the late 1890s he was living in Vancouver. He appeared at the following addresses in Vancouver.

Thomas continued to work for the C.P.R. until he retired about 1908.

In the fall of 1908, he travelled to the Nicola area to deal with mining properties.

He was a director of the Nicola Coal Company and the Recreation Park Amusement Company.

He was a member of the Masons, the Oddfellows, and the Pioneers association.

In 1916, he appeared in Who’s Who and Why.

Thomas died in Vancouver on February 19, 1924. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Mary died in Vancouver on November 30, 1953. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

Thomas and Mary had the following children.

 

Thomas Clemes Stewart

Thomas Clemes Stewart was born in Vancouver on January 3, 1896.

He studied for 14 months at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario.

On October 27, 1915, in Winnipeg, Manitoba, he signed his officer’s declaration paper to join the Canadian Expeditionary Force.

In March 1918 he was slightly wounded.

On January 10, 1919, he was discharged from the military forces under the general demobilization at the end of the war.

On February 16, 1928, in Kerrisdale (part of Vancouver), British Columbia, he married Phyllis Margaret Edgell. She was born in Montreal, Quebec on June 27, 1902.

Thomas died in Vancouver on September 28, 1963.

Phyllis died in Delta, British Columbia on July 29, 1975.

 

Mary Stewart

Mary Stewart was born in Vancouver about July 21, 1900.

She died in Vancouver on July 28, 1900. She was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.

 

Baby Stewart

Thomas and Mary had an un-named baby boy who was born on November 9, 1901. He died later on the same day. He was buried in Mountain View Cemetery in Vancouver.
