James and Janet lived in Litherland, Lancashire, after their marriage.

In 1893, one of Janet’s students, Edith M. Johnstone, was successful in a musical knowledge examination.

About 1912, James started the Lockington Preparatory School (sometimes called the Vancouver Grammar School). The school was at 1409 Beach Avenue, which is where James and his family also lived from 1914 to 1932. The students in the school were “the Sons of Gentlemen in Business and Professional Life.” The uniform for the students was a black cap with red stripes.
