Charles Symons was a tailor who lived at 2042 Beach Avenue in 1916.

Charles Symons was born in Barnstaple, Devonshire, England on June 17, 1847. His parents were John Symons and Mary Ann Ruddell (sometimes Rudall).

Charles lived with his parents until the time of the 1871 England and Wales census.

In early 1872, in South Shields, Durham, England, Charles married Ann (”Annie”) Barnhouse. She was born in Barnstaple on April 21, 1848. Her parents were William and Mary Barnhouse.

According to the 1901 Canada census, Charles and Annie arrived in Canada in 1872.

During the mid-1870s, Charles and Annie were in Toronto, Ontario, where Charles was a tailor. In 1876, they were living at 332 West Queen Street in Toronto.

In 1921, Annie was living at the Old People’s Home at the corner of Union Street and Boundary Road.

Annie died in Vancouver on April 30, 1941. She was buried in Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Vancouver.

Charles and Annie had the following children

Charles Samuel Symons

Charles Samuel Symons was born in Toronto on September 6, 1872. (He was sometimes called “C.S. Symons” or “Sam Symons.”)

He lived with his parents until about 1889. In early 1890 he moved to Victoria, British Columbia to work at the Albion Iron Works.

Vancouver Daily World, January 9, 1890, page 4, column 1.

Vancouver Daily World, January 9, 1890, page 4, column 1.

By the mid-1890s he was back in Vancouver. In 1895 he was living with his parents and working as a plumber.

By 1900 he was in England. In the spring of 1900, in Portsea Island, Hampshire, he married Rosina (“Rose”) Triggs. She was born in Portsea Island on March 2, 1876. Her parents were Edwin and Elizabeth Triggs.

Sam and Rose moved to Portland, Oregon.

In 1919, Rose went to England to visit her mother.

In 1920, Rose sued Charles for divorce on the basis of cruelty.

The Oregon Daily Journal (Portland, Oregon), August 12, 1920, page 3, column 2.

In 1921, Charles published a notice saying that he would not be responsible for Rose’s debts.

The Morning Oregonian (Portland, Oregon), May 9, 1921, page 13, column 6; https://oregonnews.uoregon.edu/lccn/sn83025138/1921-05-09/ed-1/seq-13/.

It is not clear that the proceedings actually led to a divorce. Rose and Charles may have reconciled, since they were living together in 1930 and 1940.

Charles died in Portland in 1953. He was buried in Finley-Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland.

Rose died in Portland on January 10, 1968. She was buried in Finley-Sunset Hills Memorial Park in Portland

At the time of the 1921 Canada census, Elizabeth was a fruit farmer in Naramata, British Columbia. She was living with five children; Ernest was not listed as living with Elizabeth and the children.

Ernest’s and Elizabeth’s marriage appears to have ended in divorce. Elizabeth died in Vancouver on December 22, 1955. She was buried in Forest Lawn Memorial Park in Burnaby, British Columbia.

On September 18, 1924, in Bellingham, Washington, Ernest married Emily Hughes. She was born in Dalton, near Leeds, England, on November 27, 1886.

“The people of the community of Rogers Pass Station included the snow shovel gang, and community leaders such as CD Morris, owner of the General Store. Morris had come to the Pass in 1899 with his family (wife and two children) and set up his first store in a tent (Anon. 1968).

He followed Rogers Pass Station when it relocated 1.6 kilometres north of the Summit. Morris’ property at the new station contained several buildings, one of which served as the community hall (Anon 1968; Downs 1968). During the March 4, 1910 avalanche, Morris took it upon himself to aid the stranded CPR passengers, having forty of his pigs slaughtered to feed the passengers. His facilities were also used to hold victims of the 1910 slide in the time of distress (McDonald 1997).”
